It seemed like the Saw franchise was over when Jigsaw was released in 2017, but as we all know you can’t keep a good horror franchise buried for long. With Chris Rock’s Spiral: From The Book of Saw doing reasonably well on its release as a part of the Saw universe, it now looks like there is more Saw on the way with Saw 10 having been green lit by Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures for release in October 2023.

The Saw franchise has grossed over $1 billion dollars from its low-budget origins through to its much more elaborate and “torture-porn” later movies, and as Chris Rock’s movie proved there is always apparently room in the world for more Saw. Although there are no details on exactly what plot will be incorporated into the movie, there will be something familiar about the tenth film in the franchise as it will be directed by Kevin Greutert, who previously helmed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, and acted as editor on six of the movies.

Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules broke the news in a statement that read:

As it says, more details of the movie will be revealed soon, but many fans will be hoping that this film will somehow manage to incorporate more of Tobin Bell as the misguided villain, Jigsaw. Of course the character met his demise back in the third film, but that hasn’t stopped Bell making an appearance in many of the subsequent movies thanks to some elaborate timeline trickery or flashback sequences.

“We have been listening to what the fans have been asking for and are hard at work planning a movie that Saw aficionados and horror fans alike will love, and part of that is giving the reins to Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI, which is still one of the fans’ favorites in the entire series. More details will be revealed soon.”

Saw Began As An Ingenious Movie With A Killer Twist

There are some movie franchises that immediately have mega budgets thrown at them, while others manage to make the most of what they have and run with it. Saw was certainly one of those movies. Much of the action took place in a single room, with flashback and connected sequences telling a story around the predicament of its central characters, played by Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes. The film grossed over $100 million at the box office from its minuscule budget of $1.2 million and set of a series of annual releases and the story of Jigsaw unfolded year after year.

Later movies in the series were often criticized for putting the tortuous killing devices as a priority over any kind of semi-coherent storyline, and much of the series did simply become about finding more gruesome and depraved ways of killing people, which saw the franchise being labeled “torture porn.” However, the money has continued to roll in, and even though Spiral was released in the midst of the pandemic and didn’t fare favorably with critics, the movie still managed to double its budget and keep the Saw franchise alive.

Saw 10 will hit cinemas on October 27, 2023.
