Lisa Kudrow recently recalled a memorable run-in with Jerry Seinfeld during a 1990s event, following Friends’ first season. That summer, Friends re-runs would air after Seinfeld, which was entering its sixth season. At that point, Seinfeld, which was created by Seinfeld and Larry David, had received an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Kudrow told The Daily Beast:

The actress went on to say that Seinfeld responded: “You’re on after us in the summer, and you’re welcome.”

“I remember going to some party and Jerry Seinfeld was there, and I said, ‘Hi,’ and he said, ‘You’re welcome.’ I said, ‘Why, thank you … what?’”

Kudrow did thank Seinfeld and, during her interview, acknowledged that Friends “exploded” after reruns of season one began to air right after Seinfeld. New episodes of the first season of Friends aired after Mad About You (where Kudrow appeared as a guest star in the role of Ursula Buffay beginning in 1993).

Kudrow rose to stardom for her portrayal of Phoebe Cates on Friends. The show aired for ten seasons, from 1994-2004, and also starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. In 1998, Kudrow won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Seinfeld aired for nine seasons, beginning in 1989. It received multiple awards and is still regarded as one of the best sitcoms of all time.

“Not to take anything away from the writing on Friends, or the cast, or how good Friends really was, but the first season our ratings were just fine,” she said.

A Future for Friends?

While fans are eager for a Friends revival, especially following the cast’s 2021 reunion special, Kudrow doesn’t believe this is in the cards. In March, Kudrow told Where is the Buzz that she would love to see a reboot of Friends with a new cast.

While a Friends revival with the original cast may not happen, there is another of Kudrow’s projects that fans can remain hopeful about: Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The cult classic film starred Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as friends who lie about their lives to impress their former peers during their ten-year high school reunion. Earlier this year, Sorvino appeared on TODAY and said:

Following Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Kudrow appeared on The Opposite of Sex, which earned her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2005, she wrote, starred and produced in The Comeback.

“We’re getting closer. Something might be in the works. There’s nothing official to report, but I can unofficially hint that we’re closer than we’ve ever been to getting something to happen.”

Kudrow’s noticeable film credits include: Analyze This, Easy A, Neighbors and its sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, The Girl on the Train, and Booksmart. She is scheduled to appear in The Parenting, an upcoming American horror comedy directed by Craig Johnson.
