All-new creative plans will be established for the future of DC Studios following James Gunn and Peter Safran coming in to steer the ship, and many fans are hoping that this means the Lobo movie will finally end up happening. After getting the job, Gunn made fans curious when he joined the social media platform Mastodon with an image of Lobo as his first post. Some took that to mean this was the filmmaker’s subtle way of teasing that he has plans for Lobo moving forward in the DCU.

Meanwhile, Aquaman star Jason Momoa has also made some waves by teasing that his “dream” DC project is now in the works, thanks to Gunn and Safran taking over at DC Studios.

“There’s a lot of cool things that are gonna be coming up,” Momoa told ET. “One of my dreams come true is happening under their watch, so, stay tuned.”

Following this tease, Brandon Davis of ComicBook.com asked Momoa in a separate interview if there was a connection between Gunn posting an image of Lobo along with Momoa’s “dream” project comments. The actor is said to have acted surprised before following up with this response:

Jason Momoa Has Wanted to Play Lobo for Years

Lobo is a character Momoa has previously campaigned to play in a movie. Even back in 2014, long before he’d been cast as Aquaman, Momoa said in an appearance at Evolution Expo that he wanted to play a superhero, naming Lobo as one he particularly loves.

“I think it would be really, really fun to play a superhero,” he said at the time. “You know? I’ve always talked about, like, what’s your favorite. I mean I love Lobo so… but ah… You know. It would be awesome.”

Rumors have flared up on and off again for a Lobo movie, and the idea has attracted other celebrities beyond Momoa. Last year, The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan also said he “really wanted to do Lobo for a long time,” going on to tease that he has “something maybe cooking” that didn’t end up coming to be. Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay Dave Bautista also said he’d be “all over that” last year as well when speaking about the possibility of playing Lobo in the DCU.

As of yet, there hasn’t been a solo movie or series for Lobo. At one point, there was a Krypton spinoff series focusing on Emmett J. Scanlan’s Lobo in the works at Syfy as well, but the network ultimately passed on the series after canceling Krypton. Scanlan is the only actor to have played Lobo in an official live-action adaptation.
