Locke & Key debuted on Netflix in 2020 and is an adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s popular comic series of the same name. The series follows three siblings who move into a house with multiple reality-distorting keys after the murder of their father. The series has stayed fairly true to the comics, and season 2 brought further keys that fans would be familiar with from the comic series to the screen.
Ahead of season 3, Netflix confirmed that the show will continue with much more twists and likely new keys for the Locke family to discover. Locke & Key has been a hit worldwide and shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s a dive into everything we know about the upcoming third season, including who might return, what it’s about, and when we can expect it to be released.

Cast: Who Will Return?
Netflix
It’s confirmed that the Locke Family will return for the next season. The Locke family consists of Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), Nina (Darby Stanchfield) and Duncan (Aaron Ashmore). Stanchfield spoke about wrapping up filming for season three so it can be confirmed that her character will be returning for definite.
Other cast members outside the main cast who will be returning for season 3 include Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand) and Scot (Patrice Jones). Brendan Hines will also likely play a crucial role in the series as his character Josh is a relation to Captain Gideon. Josh will likely team with the Locke family to help them face the danger that lies ahead of them.
Plot: What Will Season 3 Be About?
At the end of season 2, the plot of the series changed when the main villain Dodge was defeated. Eden also used the Echo Key, which resulted in both Captain Gideon being brought back and the creation of a new threat. Gideon was a solider who died after being possessed by a demon, and he has now become a powerful weapon for the demon dimension. The second season set him up to be the main antagonist for the upcoming series. Interestingly, this plot digresses from the comic books and doesn’t have any relation to them. This puts the specifics for how the story might go down up for debate and makes the anticipation much stronger.
It’s also very likely that the Locke family will discover a variety of new keys to aid them in their battle against Captain Gideon. Tyler also chose to forget about magic as he was grieving the death of his girlfriend, while bode has used the memory key to allow their mother to remember magic. The consequences of this will likely cause some tension throughout the series, and we may see characters change their mind about the decisions they have made. The family dynamic will likely be tested a lot in the coming series, and bonds will be tested in a way they haven’t been up until this point.
Expected Release Date
At the moment, we don’t have a solid release date for Locke & Key. However, it has been confirmed that season 3 will be released as part of Netflix’s 2022 roster of shows, and Joe Hill has confirmed that it will be a short wait than season 2. Netflix likely still has some marketing prep to do, so it’s likely that the series will be released sometime between April and July 2022.
As the series has performed extremely well, it’s not likely that there will be any interruptions to the process of getting it on the streaming platform as soon as possible. Critical ratings improved for the second season, and it manged to stay in the top 10 section of Netflix for a substantial amount of time, so here’s hoping it will be back on our screens as soon as possible.
