Spoiler Warning: Locke & Key

Our last ride with the Locke family is coming soon to Netflix. The third and final season of Locke & Key is set to drop on the streamer on August 10. Just like the first, the second season finale saw the characters seemingly defeat Dodge and return to everyday life. Obviously, it couldn’t be that simple. The finale’s last moments saw the Revolutionary War-era Captain Fredrick Gideon return as a likely third-season antagonist. While we have an idea of what the Lockes will face in the final season, there is still much we don’t know.

The creative team has stated they knew ahead of time that season three would be the last, so they were able to plan a proper conclusion to the story. With that in mind, there are still many unanswered questions. How will Gideon compare to Dodge as an antagonist? Are there any more keys still hiding out there? Have we truly seen the last of Dodge? Answering these questions and more could finally… unlock… the secrets hidden inside Keyhouse.

The New Antagonist: Fredrick Gideon?

     Netflix

The Locke & Key season 3 teaser trailer and finale cliffhanger gave us an idea of the new antagonist for the third season. After facing off with Dodge in the first and second seasons, it seems like the Lockes will take on Fredrick Gideon (Kevin Durand) in season three. Gideon was a captain in the Revolutionary War who was the first person to discover the secret portal in the sea caves back in 1775. After being possessed by a demon from the realm, Gideon is hanged for the crimes he committed while possessed. However, before he dies, he warns that others from the demon realm will follow him and destroy the world. Safe to say that he was right about that.

Fast-forward almost 250 years, and Gideon returns after being summoned from the well thanks to Eden (Hallea Jones) and the Echo Key. Eden thinks she is in control since she freed him, but Gideon has other ideas. He pushes Eden down the well and takes the Anywhere Key, now free to continue his reign of terror. This won’t be Gideon’s first run-in with the Locke family either, as he killed their ancestor Peter Locke who was using Keyhouse to hide weapons for the American military.

Before Eden is pushed into the well, she seems to recognize the demon that possessed Gideon, though we don’t hear anything more about that. Who is this demon, and how will it compare to Dodge (Laysla de Oliveira)? Being a human, it may seem like he will be a less powerful enemy than Dodge, who was a pure demon.

However, he turned on Eden almost instantly after she freed him, so it’s clear that he will go to whatever lengths necessary to get what he wants, making him just like Dodge in that regard. Only time will tell us how formidable an enemy he will be to the Locke family. Also, with the teaser hinting at yet another return of Dodge, it’s possible that a team-up may be in store.

Are There More Keys?

By the end of the second season, the Lockes have found numerous keys hidden around the house. Some of the more notable ones include the Anywhere Key, Identity Key, Head Key, Mirror Key, Plant Key, Chain Key, Memory Key, and Omega Key. Each of the keys has a unique use that the Lockes utilized in their fight against Dodge, and it seemed as though they were finding new keys with new powers in almost every episode.

Given the number of twists and turns we have seen throughout this show, it is possible that more keys out there have not yet been found. We know that the Echo Key and Anywhere Key are in the hands of Gideon, and he will likely find more of the keys throughout the season. Maybe he will also find new keys; anything is possible here.

One of the biggest developments in the second season was Duncan (Aaron Ashmore) creating the Demon and Alpha Keys. While he was forced to make the Demon Key for Dodge/Gabe (Griffin Gluck), Duncan discovered he could control the key and used it to turn the demons against Dodge. The Lockes have the ability to make a key for anything they want, which could be a game-changer for their fight against the demons in this final season.

Will Dodge Be Back?

With the Alpha Key seemingly killing Dodge in the finale, could the Lockes have finally reached the end of their battle with her? In all likelihood, no. They thought they had defeated her at the end of season one, but the audience knew it was Ellie (Sherri Saum) in the form of Dodge that was thrown through the Black Door. In the second season finale, her fate is seemingly more clear. The Alpha Key kills the demon and separates her from her host Lucas (Felix Mallard), who is able to return alive and well.

That may have seemed like the end of Dodge’s story, but the final shot of the teaser lets us know it most likely is not. We see someone who appears to be Dodge appear over Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) and whisper, “Boo.” The reason for the “appears to be Dodge” is that it is possible this is not her, and someone else has used the Identity Key to take her form. Maybe another enemy does this to intimidate the family, as Dodge was their biggest threat. Or perhaps the demon somehow survived her apparent death and is back to terrorize the family again. After all, it wouldn’t be a proper conclusion to the story if we didn’t see the key characters face off with their greatest enemy one last time.
