Fans of Loki are looking forward to finding out what is in store for the god of mischief in the second season of his Disney+ show, and when the show does return it will have a different director at the helm. While Kate Herron was highly praised for the first season of Loki, she chose to step back from the follow-up, leaving way for Moon Knight directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson to come in and oversee the show. The pair’s work on two of Moon Knight’s episodes was reportedly what led to conversations about Loki, and they have been describing how the two shows are not too dissimilar and the new season of Loki will be “fresh.”
While discussing Moon Knight ahead of the show’s premiere with ComicBook.com, Moorhead and Benson touched on Loki, which they said was very much like the MCU’s latest addition, and they want it to be something new and fresh, which was pretty much the idea behind Moon Knight. Moorhead said:
“I think the biggest thing about Loki is just that it’s actually a lot like Moon Knight, where there’s just no reason to do it if it’s not going to be something new and fresh. It’s funny is, it does feel like Marvel would be willing to walk away unless it actually is something that they felt the unexpected. Like from Moon Knight and especially because Moon Knight is a character where nobody knows almost anything about him, yet. Soon to be changed, right? And so our gloves are off and we get to kind of do whatever we want. And everybody at Marvel and ourselves gets really excited when we are presented with the unexpected. We also of course, hope that people watching feel the same way and we’re gonna bring all that to Loki.”
Loki May Have A Fresh Feel, But Will Be More Connected Than Moon Knight
Moon Knight has pulled in a lot of praise from the early reviews of its premiere episode, landing an 88% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. While that series is being promoted as a mostly unconnected MCU adventure, that stands on its own merits and forms a deep character study of its lead character Marc Spector and his many personalities, Loki will have a much more connected feel to the ongoing development of the multiverse.
The first season of Loki saw the introduction of the TVA, a hidden group who ensure that time runs as it is meant to on the sacred timeline and does not branch out with variants. By the end of the series though, a lot had changed. The TVA was exposed as being more than it seemed, the timeline had very much been broken, and we were given a first look at one of the variants of Kang The Conqueror. While there is a lot that could change before the second season of Loki comes around, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set to blow open the multiverse, it is unclear whether the new episodes will directly follow the first season’s finale, which showed that a version of Kang had arrived in Loki’s world, or will take some cues from upcoming Marvel events.
