Loki, along with additional Marvel Studios original series on Dinsey+, has stepped farther away from Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, challenging what is possible for Phase 4 and beyond. The first season left the series, if not the future of the Marvel Universe, open for a multiverse that will enable the expansion of new characters and new worlds. The second season of Loki was only vaguely teased in the post-credit sequence following the end of the season one finale, though there’s still more that is yet to be uncovered: a release date, cast, and a plot.
The Disney+ Original was the third of Marvel Studios’ growing collection of television programs designed for the streaming service. The television series, starting with WandVision (2021), form a bridge between the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the recently introduced television universe, and how the two will contribute equally to the overarching span of Marvel’s live-action media. Through this, series such as Loki are given the ability to dive further into the seemingly-infinite world of Marvel and could do so through additional chapters of established, pre-existing shows. Though the details that flesh out Loki’s second season are still kept under wraps, there are a number of theories afoot that could lean into what has the possibility of coming next.

Loki Given Renewal for Season 2
The series, which picked up directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), and follows an alternative version of Loki Laufeyson, who has been played by Tom Hiddleson since Thor (2011). Laufeyson is found facing off with the Time Variance Authority (or the TVA), battling with his identity of a variation of themself in an alternative timeline, and the looming threat of He Who Remains, Kang the Conquerer after the true nature of his identity was revealed in the finale’s waning moments. Shortly after the episode drew to a close, the mid-credits spent no time in hesitancy when sharing the announcement that Loki would return. Outside of the extremely brief tease from Marvel Studios and Disney, the noise around Loki Season 2 has been drawn to a hush, leaving the aftermath of Season 1 to leave its impact on the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it unfolds piece-by-piece.
What Could Happen in the Second Season?
Hiddleson is highly expected to reprise the role of Laufeyson as the show’s renewal is expected to further elaborate on the established plotline, and the cliffhanger ending. With him, he could bring a number of familiar faces. Sophie D’Martino (Sylvie Laufeydittor) and Owen Wilson (Mobius M. Mobius), as well as Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Judge Ravonna Renslayer and Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15), are additionally hoped for a return to the series. These central characters have deemed themselves incredibly detrimental to the future of Loki. After the events of He Who Remains (Jonathan Masters) claiming ownership of the TVA unleashes chaos, a multiversal war is soon to break out. The second season is bound to indulge in the pandemonium of the clashing of universes while keeping in stride with a number of overlapping subplots.
Renslayer still pursues her quest to achieve free will, and Hunter B-15, after confirming her theory that other Troopers are simply variants at work, sets out to seek those responsible for putting them there. In the newly-birthed alternative timeline, Renslayer’s variant finds herself acting as a school vice-principle, and there could be the opportunity to see her fight to return to the universe to which she truly belongs. Laufeyson, amid the hue and cry of the TVA, could be tasked with keeping the freshly-arrived variants at bay while simultaneously regaining contact with those who were scrambled into other worlds. They, in their clamor, could seek out Laufeydittor, if she’s not gone off on her own.
Amid the fervor, the second season could sink more into the development of Marvel’s latest big-bad begin the procession of the villain arc. With the lack of Time-Keepers controlling the progression of proper time and keeping the multitude of universes aligned, Season 2 has the opportunity of viewing the TVA from a more unhinged perspective. It seems as if Loki is taking the opportunity to set its titular character in the background of their own show, giving fresh faces more air time as their stories are told.
When Will Loki Season 2 Arrive?
Marvel Studios President has offered up insight to those who have been fixated on the Season 1 finale and the direction that Loki may find itself headed in as the next season undergoes its development. When prompted by Collider about the dramatics of the Season 1 send-off and any comment on Season 2, Feige responded with “it is underway. We’re developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return. Kate [Herron] is going on to bigger and better things, so the director search will begin shortly.” Feige’s comments have implied that after the departure of the former Loki director, that the studio is promptly seeking out a suitable replacement for the subsequential season.
Though Herron will not direct the God of Mischief’s upcoming adventures on the small screen, the show is still promised to go on. Feige’s updates may have been brief, but they ensure that Marvel Studios still intends on giving Loki its additional entry into the series. However, seeking out a director sets the show back some, and delays when the pre-production process can smoothly begin. It remains unclear as to how many seasons Loki will expand across in total, though after the initial plan of Loki being a one-off mini-series by Marvel, there’s no definitive answer. There is also no definitive answer as to when Loki Season 2 may arrive on Disney+, though a safe estimate would be to gear expectations for Fall 2023 or beyond.
