HBO has pulled the plug on the comedy series Los Espookys. Originally premiering on HBO in 2019, the series was created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, all of whom also star alongside Bernado Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti. The show’s second season premiered in September, but its future had remained unclear with Los Espookys sitting on the bubble ever since. Unfortunately for fans, Variety now reports that the series has been axed with no third season in the works.

Addressing the show coming to an end, HBO noted in a statement, “We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays. We thank Julio, Ana, and Fred for this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they created. We are not currently planning on a third season, but we would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.”

Los Espookys, which follows a group of friends who “turn their love for horror into a peculiar business, providing horror to those who need it,” also starred Jose Pablo Minor< CaroL Kane, Spoke Einbender, River L. Ramirez, Greta Titelman, and Carmen Gloria Bresky. Martine Gutierrez, and Yalitza Aparicio joined the show in season 2.

Series creators Fabrega, Torres, and Armisen also executive produced the series alongside Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer, and Alice Mathias. Sharon Lopez and Andy Garland produced while Nate Young co-executive produced.

Los Espookys Won’t Have a Third Season

There was no guarantee that season 3 would happen, but the show’s creators seemed to be hopeful that a renewal would happen when speaking about the possibility in an interview in September. Fabrega commented on directing alongside Torres.

“[Julio and I] were going to direct the last two episodes together, but then schedule-wise Julio had to finish up his movie as we were starting to prep, so it was kind of like, Focus on your movie, I’ll focus on this. We were gonna do it together, so I’m assuming that if there’s a next season that we would each direct,” Fabrega said, via Paste Magazine.

Kim Petras and Isabella Rossellini also guest starred in season 2 with the latter playing herself. So, if there were to have been a third season, who else might we have seen pop up in a bizarre cameo? Torres suggested that it could be “Björk, but as like, a pharmacist… a bank teller on vacation.”

Fabrega added,” Yeah playing a really like, whatever role."

We can only imagine what might have happened in season 3. You can stream both seasons of Los Espookys on HBO Max.
