Romantic comedies have always flooded the market when it comes to anything on the big screen. From holiday-themed rom-coms like Last Holiday and New Year’s Eve to teenage ones like 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless to older classics like Pretty Woman and Sleepless in Seattle and everything in between. Everyone could name at least one well-known rom-com even if they haven’t seen them. And why is this true? Because romantic comedies, while plentiful, are also timeless. Whether the time period is older or more modern, whether the overall situation is humorous or born of tragedy, whether the characters are willing to love or reluctant, none of that matters. What matters in a rom-com is that the movies can mold to almost any situation making the genre relatable if not just entertaining.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The movie Love Again approaches the genre from the avenue of it being born out of tragedy. It will beg the question to the audience of how to move on in life after a tragic loss. How do you withstand the loss of a significant other? How do you survive the loneliness of the loss and the absence of the person who shared all of life’s ups and downs, funny moments, and daily meaningful or even meaningless conversations? With technology at your fingertips, what resources would you even use to get through the grieving process, figure out a new path in life after loss, and try to go on living? Where do you even start?

Love Again: The Plot

In the movie Love Again, we find the main character Mira Ray in this exact situation. After dealing with the unexpected death of her fiancé, Mira finds herself alone in the life she thought she was planning. As time passes, and she isolates herself from her friends and family more and more, they obviously become increasingly concerned for her well-being.

In the age of ever-present technology, she has the means to reach out to any number of friends and family as she endures the aftermath of the loss. Mira, however, copes with her fiancé’s death in the only way that feels right for her. She spends her time sending romantic, heartfelt, and often heartbreaking texts to her fiancé’s old number believing that these messages are doing nothing but floating off into the ether.

Meanwhile, across town, we have journalist Rob Burns whose new work number just happens to be the late fiancé’s reassigned phone number. Because of this twist in fate, Rob keeps receiving messages from Mira. The more he reads the messages, the more intrigued he becomes with Mira’s past which has led her to text him. While on an assignment to write a profile of the renowned performer Celine Dion, he confides in her about the texts he is receiving from Mira, his own romantic troubles, and how the texts have affected him. He then enlists the singer’s help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person and try to win her heart in true romantic comedy style.
