Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation known for such critically acclaimed movies as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and When Marnie Was There, among many, many others. Able to balance childhood wonder with dark, more mature themes, Studio Ghibli has become renowned for making some of the greatest animated movies of all time. Able to leap between light-hearted classics such as Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo and darkly disturbing material like the haunting Grave of the Fireflies, we can only imagine what wonders they will conjure when approaching a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars Has Dabbled in Animation Before

     Disney+

This would not be the first foray into animation for the Star Wars franchise, with Star Wars: Visions being one of their most recent. An animated anthology series created for the streaming service Disney+, Star Wars: Visions is comprised of nine anime short films, each of which were produced by seven Japanese animation studios, including Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Production I.G, and Science SARU.

Star Wars: Visions was met with critical acclaim, with the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes (on which it holds a rating of 96%) reading, “Gorgeously animated and wildly creative, Visions is an eclectic, but wholly enjoyable collection of Star Wars stories that breathe new life into the galaxy.” No doubt Studio Ghibli will be aiming to reach the same heights. And no doubt they will and then some.

Further success in animated Star Wars outings came even more recently with Tales of the Jedi, which landed on Disney+ just last month. An anthology miniseries created by Dave Filoni, Tales of the Jedi tells several stories featuring Jedi from the Star Wars prequel trilogy era and was also met with stellar reviews, sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Under the reliable stewardship of Dave Filoni, Tales of the Jedi is an absorbing expansion of Star Wars lore that will delight Padawan-level fans and encyclopedic Force scholars alike,” the critical consensus reads.

There are currently several Star Wars projects on the horizon, with the franchise having largely shifted from big-screen releases to serial ones following the conclusion of the Disney sequel trilogy. In live-action, Disney+ will debut new seasons of The Mandalorian and Andor alongside new shows such as The Acolyte, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

We will have more details on this exciting Studio Ghibli/LucasFilm collaboration as it happens.
