Skydance Animation has released its first-ever feature animation film with Luck. The studio decided to go all out with the voice cast, featuring a large ensemble of talent with well over fifty years of experience between them. Here we are going to be covering the main voice actors featured throughout the film and detailing parts they have played in previous projects. With such a strong cast, there are plenty of projects to pull from, both in the animated field as well as the live-action space.
6 John Ratzenberger
CBS Television iDistribution
John Ratzenberger’s role in the film is primarily in the third act, but the actor certainly leaves an impression as he plays the kind and accepting Rootie. Rootie is the bartender of a tiki bar in the Bad Luck half of the world, as well as acting as the land’s de facto leader. Despite Bad Luck residents having a monstrous appearance, Rootie is an excellent example that not all are as bad as they may appear. John Ratzenberger has plenty of credentials in the voice acting realm, most notably in his roles in multiple Pixar films. He’s been Hamm in the Toy Story franchise; the Abominable Snowman in Monsters Inc. (2001), The Underminer in The Incredibles franchise, and more. John Ratzenberger also has a well-known live-action role, having played Cliff Calvin in the hit sitcom Cheers.
5 Colin O’Donoghue
NBCUniversal Television Distribution
Colin O’Donoghue plays a kind and compassionate leprechaun named Gerry. Gerry is known to often go out of his way to help other people, including Bob, the lucky cat, even though Bob insists that they are not friends and that Gerry is merely his assistant. Colin O’Donoghue is no stranger to the animated realm, with his most prominent role coming in the Trollhunters franchise featured on Netflix. Having appeared in a guest role for the first two entries, O’Donoghue would be promoted to main character when his role of Douxie would take on the lead role of the Wizards: Tales of Arcadia series began airing. Not being left behind in the live-action space, Colin O’Donoghue was able to play the part of Captain Hook in the hit series Once Upon A Time.
4 Flula Borg
Universal Pictures
Flula Borg brings his well-accentuated accent to the role of Jeff the unicorn. This German unicorn is tasked with maintaining the luck-distributing machine as well as providing the first line of defense in making sure no Bad Luck enters Good Luck. Jeff is also in love with Babe, the dragon (as played by Jane Fonda). Flula Borg is known for his prominent and distinguished voice, having appeared in animated projects such as Trolls World Tour (2020) as Dickory, the yodeling Troll, and DJ Herzogenaurach in Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022). Flula Borg also takes his talents to live-action, such as when he briefly dressed up as Javelin in The Suicide Squad (2021) and when he played the part of Pieter Kramer in the Pitch Perfect franchise.
3 Whoopi Goldberg
Paramount Pictures
Whoopi Goldberg plays the part of the Captain, a leprechaun charged with making sure the creatures that travel to the human world are using and returning their lucky pennies properly. The Captain is seen to have an immediate dislike of Bob, not trusting him, implying that there is a strong bias from the Captain aimed at creatures usually associated with Bad Luck.
Whoopi Goldberg’s first major voice acting credit came with Disney as she played Shenzi, one of the three main hyenas that worked under the heel of Scar in The Lion King (1994). She also plays the anthropomorphic book named Fantasy in the hit hybrid film The Pagemaster (1994). Goldberg is known for her many live-action appearances as well, having won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her role as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost (1990).
2 Simon Pegg
20th Century Fox
Simon Pegg plays Bob, the cat that Sam meets, who also helps to kickstart the events of the film. Bob is out of luck when he realizes that his lucky penny has been flushed down the toilet and must begin a scheme to get it back. Bob can be standoffish, never wanting to get too close to others for fear that they would learn too much about him. Simon Pegg has had many ventures into the animated world, with one of his most famous roles being when he played Buck in the Ice Age franchise. Simon Pegg is also known for taking part in major live-action franchises, such as when he played Scotty in the modern-day Star Trek franchise and when he played Benji Dunn in the Mission Impossible franchise.
1 Eva Noblezada
Apple Studios
Eva Noblezada was the one selected to take on the starring role in this film, playing Sam Greenfield, an 18-year-old woman who has just aged out of a foster home. Having spent her life in the home, Sam is afraid of stepping into the world alone, having no family to call her own. Sam also seems to have the worst luck of anyone, though she’s always worked hard to maintain a positive attitude and endures despite the awful circumstances.
Eva Noblezada is very new to the voice-acting field, with the majority of her credits coming not on screen or behind a mic but on stage. Noblezada is such a renowned performer that she has twice been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical at the Tony Awards. First for her role as Kim in ‘Miss Saigon’ and then for her role as Eurydice in ‘Hadestown.’
