The official synopsis for M3GAN reads:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (McGraw), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
M3GAN Has Been Described as Annabelle Meets the Terminator
Universal Pictures
The upcoming horror movie M3GAN is getting some big hype from one of its producers. James Wan, who’s producing the film with Jason Blum, shared his thoughts on M3GAN in a previous interview with Empire. As Wan explains, the M3GAN doll may have been designed to be friendly, but once she becomes sentient, all hell breaks loose. The concept comes from a fascination that Wan admits he has in seeing someone — or something — meant to be innocent and pure turning out to be the exact opposite of that.
“It’s Annabelle meets The Terminator,” Wan says of M3GAN. “(Her innocent nature) soon goes off the rails. I’m fascinated by things that are meant to be innocent, but become more… malign.”
Of course, the film has also drawn some comparisons to the Child’s Play franchise. Both sides have had fun with the comparisons, as there was a point where the official Twitter accounts for Chucky and M3GAN were feuding. Does this mean that a crossover will happen some day? Who knows, but there’s already some talk about M3GAN getting a sequel.
M3GAN will be released in movie theaters on Jan. 6, 2023. You can check out another look at the film by watching the first trailer below.
