Killer doll movies have always been an excellent way to broaden the horror genre. Films like Child’s Play, Puppet Master, and Poltergeist shaped the tone for several more, including the Conjuring trilogy and Annabelle films. While Chucky has been haunting people for almost three decades, he seems to have a rival in the form of a creepy robotic doll.

M3GAN, which stands for Model Three Generative Android, is a new horror thriller by James Wan and Akela Cooper. When the film’s official trailer was released, there were several discussions and memes about Chucky and M3gan on the internet, and the film grew increasingly popular. Since the film is produced by Blumhouse Productions, which is well-known for prior popular projects such as Insidious, The Black Phone, and Halloween Ends, the expectations are very high.

Unlike previous killer doll movies that rely on supernatural horror, M3GAN has a distinct sci-fi premise that makes the wait worthwhile. While we await the film’s release, here’s everything we know about M3GAN, an upcoming horror thriller.

M3GAN: The Plot

The film follows Cady, who loses her parents in a car accident and finds it difficult to stay strong in the aftermath of such a tragic event. Everything seems to be going well for a while after her aunt, Gemma, brings Cady to the house and cares for her.

However, she discovers that caring for a little girl, especially when she has recently lost her family, is more complicated than she had imagined. It just so happens that Gemma has been working on her dream project of creating a robotic doll companion to keep a child from feeling lonely or unhappy.

Cady’s condition improves after meeting the doll M3gan, as she spends more time playing and overcomes the pain of loneliness. Nevertheless, in horror stories, every good thing must come to an end, and the instructions provided to the doll appear to have backfired on Gemma. M3gan, who swore to protect Cady no matter what, has taken her role far too seriously, and she will not stop until she sees through it, even if it means killing those who can harm Cady mentally or physically.

Gerard Johnstone, popularly known for his works Housebound, The Jaquie Brown Diaries, and The New Legends of Monkey, is directing the film, while Akela Cooper is managing the screenplay as well as her share of the script.

Release Date

As officially announced by Universal Pictures, M3GAN, the upcoming horror thriller film, will release on January 6, 2023, in the United States and most likely on the same day in other regions. The film was initially scheduled to be released on January 13, 2023, but the production company changed the date later for unknown reasons.

“I had such a great time working together with Jason on Insidious, a film that did a lot of good for both of us, I don’t forget where I started from, and I’m grateful and appreciative of Jason. We’ve been looking for something to collaborate on again since.”

Due to its violent content, the film is now rated PG-13, indicating it is only appropriate for children over thirteen. So, if you’re planning to watch the movie with your family, take this into consideration. The film is not far from its release, and with the trend of M3gan on social media, the hype is real, and you should look forward to it.
