With Halloween approaching, people are looking forward to exceptional spooky tales to fit the mood, and Universal Pictures has dropped a trailer for M3GAN just in time. The film is a collaboration between James Wan (Malignant) and Akela Cooper (American Horror Story) and stars Allison Williams from Get Out and Violet McGraw from The Haunting of Hill House. It is directed by Gerard Johnstone, who is also writing the upcoming Justice League Dark script.
Wan and Cooper’s new horror film follows Gemma, a robotics engineer who works for a toy company. She creates a robotic doll, “M3GAN-Model Three Generative, Android,” to act as the children’s greatest ally and save them from physical and mental harm. However, things go awry when she decides to put it to the test on her niece, who has recently lost both parents, and Gemma faces unexpected consequences. While the story appears to be intriguing, there is much more to discuss.

Here’s a closer look at the M3GAN trailer and what it entails in the bigger picture.
Lost Hope but Found a New One
Universal Pictures
The trailer begins with Gemma, a responsible aunt caring for her niece Cady, who recently lost her parents. She adopts Cady and brings her home, saying, “You’re my niece. I’m gonna do everything I can to make this place feel like home.” Cady, on the other hand, looks uncomfortable in her new home and is still haunted by the memory of her parent’s deaths.
Gemma is also grieving the loss and finds it difficult to parent Cady. We see her admitting that she is unprepared to take on such a huge responsibility and conceiving an ideal solution to heal Cady. Gemma has been working tirelessly on her dream project of creating a robotic doll companion that would keep a child from feeling lonely or sad. Cady now has a new companion who will go to any length to keep her happy and safe, thanks to Gemma’s introduction of Megan, the new doll with an unnervingly human design. Is it appropriate to say she found new hope?
Never Feel Lonely With Megan in the House
As Cady gets a new friend who can help her cope with the loneliness, they bring Megan home, and her entrance is quite spectacular, with her wearing sunglasses as if she owns the place. Then we see how Megan makes Cady happy by making her a lovely bed, having some happy laughs while dancing around (moves taught by Cady), and passing the time by playing games. She eventually overcomes her loneliness, and Gemma is content with her role as a parent and considers Megan a member of her family.
However, Gemma’s co-worker questions the new bond, saying, “They could be building emotional connections that are too difficult to untangle,” and her words end up being true. Sure, Megan makes Cady happy and never lets loneliness affect her friend, but who knew that would lead to nightmares for the family?
Let the Nightmares Begin: You Underestimated Megan
Later in the trailer, Gemma, Megan, and Cady have dinner together, and the aunt tells her niece to eat toppings, which triggers Megan. When Megan tries to persuade Gemma that forcing kids to eat vegetables will most likely result in hating them as adults, Gemma becomes enraged and clicks the switch to turn Megan off. Gemma has no idea that this AI doll has already developed her own conscience, and she questions her by saying, “I thought we were having a conversation,” which creeps her out.
Although Gemma dismisses the abrupt change in behavior, the next scene proves that she made a big mistake. The next day, Cady plays with her neighbor in the woods, where Megan is oddly positioned in the middle of a pile of dolls. Then the neighbor’s kid bullies Cady by pointing to Megan and eventually pushes the girl, triggering Megan again, but on a different level. The doll chases him with all four limbs, terrifying him, and as he runs for his life, we see him collapse in front of a moving car as if Megan intentionally pushed him. Megan later confirms her suspicions when she admits that she would do anything to keep Cady safe.
The next day, they bring the neighbor’s dead body, and Megan watches from the house, adding to the film’s eerie atmosphere. Gemma decides to get rid of Megan with the help of her colleagues, but her plan backfires when the doll hangs one of them and blows up the laboratory.
Moving on, Megan goes into completely maniac mode, dancing gracefully in style and brutally killing people with a knife. Even when Cady yells, “What’s wrong with you?” Megan repeats her words as if her entire existence is based on this mission: “I won’t let anything harm you….ever again.” The trailer ends with her nailing Gemma’s hand to the ground and preparing to kill her.
The concept of creating a robotic doll that takes her role too seriously and her ability to articulate herself at an adult level keeps audiences intrigued throughout the film. Megan sees Cady as a broken child with nothing but pain and wants her to be happy without interference from others.
That explains why she is triggered by anything remotely related to Cady, which makes us even more eager to see the film in theaters. M3GAN is expected to release on January 13, 2023, and you’ll soon be able to see Girl Boss Chucky in action.
