Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will join the pantheon of Marvel heroes, with the rising star set to join Dakota Johnson in Sony’s upcoming Madame Web movie. Revealed courtesy of Deadline, Sweeney will star alongside Johnson in the hugely mysterious Sony/Marvel flick, which is due to be directed by S.J. Clarkson.
Sydney Sweeney’s star is rapidly on the rise thanks to her role in the acclaimed HBO teen drama series Euphoria, in which she features alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home actress Zendaya. Sweeney first gained mainstream attention for her role in the Netflix series Everything Sucks! back in 2018, and has since starred in a whole host of well-known and well-regarded projects on both the big and small screen, such as The White Lotus, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Sharp Objects, and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Sydney Sweeney’s role in Sony’s Madame Web movie is currently unknown, but speculation has already begun that the Euphoria star could be herself suiting up as a recognizable Marvel character. The most popular theories so far regarding Sweeney’s role in proceedings include Felicia Hardy AKA Black Cat, a world-renowned cat burglar who has leaped from being Spider-Man’s enemy, to associate, to love-interest, and back again; Silver Sable, a mercenary, hunter of war criminals, and leader of the superhero team Wild Pack; with some even suggesting that Sydney Sweeney could be the new live-action Gwen Stacy.
Madame Web Will Introduce Another Marvel Character to Sony’s Comic Book Movie Universe
Marvel
There is a lot of mystery surrounding the upcoming Madame Web movie, and almost nothing has been revealed about the direction of the story or character. All we know so far is that Fifty Shades of Grey and Suspiria star Dakota Johnson will play the title character. A powerful clairvoyant, and precognitive mutant, Madame Web has often been depicted as a blind elderly woman suffering from myasthenia gravis. Due to her illness, she is connected to a life support system resembling a spiderweb, and thus given the name Madame Web.
Madame Web usually steps in to help Spider-Man on his missions, particularly the multiversal ones, but with Dakota Johnson on board, it is expected that Sony will either tell some kind of origin of the character or make some changes along the way.
Madame Web will no doubt play into Sony’s growing Spider-Man Universe, which includes the likes of Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter. “Well, there’s the Marvel Universe, which is one container, and then there’s the Spider-Verse movies, which are different and then there’s the other universe where the Sony characters are in,” producer Amy Pascal explained recently. “We all are very respectful of each other and work together and make sure that we’re only being additive.”
Next up for Sony’s Shared Spider-Man Universe is Morbius. Starring Jared Leto, Morbius will introduce the latest in the line of antiheroes, with Leto leading the movie as a doctor who attempts to cure himself of a deadly blood disorder. Instead, he manages to transform himself into a blood-thirsty vampire. Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1, 2022.
