Madame Web will no longer be arriving in theaters on July 7th, 2023, following a delay from Sony. Instead, the release window is being swung back three months to October 6th of the same year. The film will follow Dakota Johnson in the lead role as Madame Web herself, a telepath whose psychic abilities allow her to see visions of the future, and who is an on-again-off-again ally to Spider-Man.
Johnson has shared her excitement for the role in the past, saying, ‘I’m so excited. It’s pretty cool to be in the Marvel world, especially with a character that’s not so known.’ She continued, ‘There’s a lot of space to make her very cool. I’m very excited. It’s always been a dream of mine to do some kind of massive action movie.’ The actress won’t be alone in the film, with a star-studded cast set to join Johnson.

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is confirmed to join the project, alongside Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Adam Scott (Severance), Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers), Mike Epps (Winning Time), and Celeste O’ Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife). S.J. Clarkson is directing Madame Web, with previous experience working on Marvel projects such as The Defenders and Jessica Jones. In addition, Clarkson recently directed an episode of the HBO Max series, Succession. Karem Sanga, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless are writing the movie.
Madame Web is still over a year away from theaters, so audiences will be waiting quite a while before they feast their eyes on the all-star cast in Sony’s latest Marvel film.
Who is Madame Web?
Marvel Comics
Madame Web is a mutant with psychic sensory powers, including telepathy, clairvoyance, prescience, and the ability to sense the presence of psionic powers in others. In addition, she is a victim of myasthenia gravis, blind, and is cybernetically linked to a spider-web-like life support chair that attends to all of her bodily needs. She originally appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in Nov. 1980, with plenty of comic appearances over the years.
Sydney Sweeney has discussed the difficulty of keeping track of the character throughout all her comics in an interview with Variety and how excited she is to join the project.
Sweeney’s role is still a mystery in Madame Web; however, fans will find out on October 6th when the Sony spin-off arrives in theaters.
“I’ve been ordering a bunch of comic books. There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a really big fan of all the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. I’ve grown up watching them all and I’ve been engulfed in the entire world my entire life, so being able to be a part of that is such an incredible, incredible thing.”
