Madonna discussed the status of her upcoming biopic in a recent interview with Variety. Madonna shared that she is still working on the script and “whittling away at it,” comparing the process of shortening her life story to hacking off limbs. Titled Little Sparrow, the biopic will tell the singer’s personal story from her perspective. The current script details Madonna’s meteoric rise to fame from her early performances to the Blond Ambition Tour in 1990, but that may evolve.

The pop icon, often referred to as the Queen of Pop, was asked by the publication why she decided to work on her own biopic.

While production on the film is yet to begin, the coveted role of Madonna has gone to Julia Garner (Ozark). Interest in the role was high and garnered the attention of actresses including Florence Pugh, Sky Ferreira, and Alexa Demie. While no other cast members have been announced, it was reported that Madonna met with Julia Fox (Uncut Gems) regarding the role of Debi Mazar, Madonna’s long-time best friend.

“I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. No one’s going to tell my story, but me," she said.

Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) was attached to the script early on but exited the project in 2021 after submitting a final draft. Rumors circulated that she moved on to other projects after tension with Madonna, but those rumors have been denied. Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary) is now on board to co-write further drafts. As well as serving as co-writer, Madonna will serve as director for the film. She previously directed films, including W.E. and Filth & Wisdom.

Little Sparrow will be released by Universal Pictures, no tentative release date has been announced. It is unknown if Madonna will appear in the film.
