The Nazis are back in Indiana Jones 5, with Mads Mikkelsen looking every bit the part in new images of his villain. Mikkelsen will play Voller, a Nazi who Indiana Jones will be going up against in a race to claim something that could be used to “make the world a better place.” Exactly how a former Nazi would make the world a better place is something that has dark connotations, and is clearly a reason why Indy wants to stop Voller achieving his goal.

Many fans will remember that the Nazi’s first faced-off against Indiana in Raiders of the Lost Ark, where they sought to claim the Ark of the Covenant and all its powers. However, things took a gory turn when the Ark was opened and claimed the lives of all the Nazis around it in a horrifying manner. Now there is something new the regime have their eyes on, but being set in 1969, a lot has changed for both them and Indy. When it comes to his character, Mikkelsen told Empire Magazine that his character is on a mission. He said:

What exactly the mistakes are that Mikkelsen’s Voller wants to correct is unknown yet, but he will be aided by his “lapdog” Klaber, played by Boyd Holbrook. With chases and adventure expected, secrets about the past, present and future of Indy being revealed and the rumors of time travel still very much being whispered, Indiana Jones 5 is becoming one of the most anticipated movies of next summer.

“He’s a man who would like to correct some of the mistakes of the past. There is something that could make the world a much better place to live in. He would love to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it as well. And so, we have a story.”

Will Indiana Jones Time Travel in Indiana Jones 5?

Talk of a time-travel storyline in Indiana Jones 5 has been the stuff of rumors almost since the movie was announced. There have been a couple of reasons for this, and so far there has been no firm debunking of the possibility by director James Mangold or anyone involved in the movie.

Early set photos seemed to suggest that the movie will feature a number of different time periods, and when Antonio Banderas was seen as a Roman gladiator, rumors of a time travel-based plot certainly took a big step up. Also in the earliest footage revealed at D23 Expo, John Rhys Davies’ character is seen challenging Indiana’s belief that he is out of time.

Mads Mikkelsen’s comments that his character is looking for something that could help change past mistakes and make the world a ‘much better place to live in” could have the suggestion of time-travel about it, if the character wants to be able to go back and perhaps stop World War II ending the way it did. This is just one of the fan theories being floated on social media. Whether time travel does have a part to play in the final adventure of Indiana Jones is unclear, but after facing aliens and being in the presence of many forbidden and unworldly artifacts, it would not be the most unbelievable adventure of his career.
