Directed by Steven Soderbergh, written by Reid Carolin, and produced by Channing Tatum, Magic Mike’s Last Dance will explore the further exploits of male stripper Mike Lane as he begins to look at life beyond the glitz and glory of the stage.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Introduced in 2012, the first Magic Mike centers on Channing Tatum as the titular Michael “Magic Mike” Lane, who performs as a stripper for the Xquisite group. Magic Mike is loosely based on the experiences of Tatum, with the first outing following Mike as he takes a 19-year-old budding stripper named Adam under his wing. The first Magic Mike proved to be a big financial hit, with Tatum and his troops’ dance moves leading to a box office gross of over $167 million.

Magic Mike was met with positive reviews from critics and spawned a sequel, Magic Mike XXL, in 2015. This time directed by Gregory Jacobs, and once again starring Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash and Joe Manganiello, the sequel was not quite as well received as its predecessor but was once again a box office success.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance also stars Eternals and Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard actress Salma Hayek in a pivotal role, with her and Mike’s relationship central to the story. “Not just taking the dancing to another level, but really getting into the relationship aspect that’s been an undercurrent in all of the films,” director Steven Soderbergh previously revealed. “Like Mike has a full-on relationship that’s at the center of this movie, while all this stuff is going on, and we haven’t done that before.”

Director Steven Soderbergh Has Teased Adventures Beyond Magic Mike

While it is expected (and the title certainly suggests) that Magic Mike’s Last Dance will bring the life and times of Tatum’s Mike Lane to an end, director Steven Soderbergh has teased adventures beyond Magic Mike. “I think there are other things to be done within what I consider now to be a larger Magic Mike universe,” the filmmaker said. “There are stories that can be told that have the same sort of ethos and are tackling the same subjects that still involve dance but don’t have Mike Lane in them.”

The Magic Mike Universe has already spilled out beyond the big screen, with a stage musical written by Reid Carolin and titled Magic Mike Live London debuting in the UK back in 2018. More recently, the dancing delights have made their way to Las Vegas thanks to Magic Mike Live Las Vegas.

Written by Reid Carolin and starring Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, Caitlin Gerard, Gavin Spokes, and Christopher Bencomo, Magic Mike’s Last Dance is set to be theatrically released on February 10, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
