Marcel The Shell With Shoes On Debuts With Perfect 100 Score At Rotten Tomatoes

A24 has another hit on their hands! Following its June 24th opening, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On has scored a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! Audiences and critics alike have fallen head over heels for the little shell in the big world. A24’s official synopsis describes the film below.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On started out as a collaboration between Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp. The two happened to cross paths at a wedding and were sharing a hotel with five other people to save money. Slate, who had recently been let go from Saturday Night Live after one season, started speaking in a little, funny voice. Fleischer-Camp, who had big dreams of directing, was hooked. After 48 hours of stop-motion filmmaking, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On made his debut in a short film that was uploaded to YouTube in 2010. The short was a viral success and spawned two other short film sequels that were also uploaded to YouTube.

What sets Marcel the movie apart from the Marcel YouTube series is a bigger scale. While the documentary style shorts followed little Marcel around the inside (and outside) of a house, the movie follows the little shell on an adventure to find his lost family, while still keeping the same small-scale charm and documentary style of the shorts. Fleischer-Camp and Slate were not impressed. The once-married and now-divorced couple were dead set on keeping to the initial spirit of the shorts for the Marcel movie. Looks like the passion has paid off. By sticking to the initial charm of the shorts, Marcel has snuck his way into the hearts of audiences and critics alike. The little shell is now larger than life on the big screen. Currently, there is no news on a release date for streaming services, but because of A24’s deal with Showtime, it’s probably safe to bet that’s where the little shell will end up (aside from digital rental on other services).
