The new movie Babylon might be coming up short at the box office, but fans are saying not to pin that on Margot Robbie. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, Babylon features an ensemble cast that includes Robbie alongside Brat Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Tobey Maguire. The film follows various characters during the rise of sound films in the 1920s following the era of silent films.

While Babylon has been an awards darling, already garnering nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, it has turned out to be a box office dud since debuting ahead of Christmas weekend. The film, budgeted at around $80 million, grossed less than $6 million over the course of its four-day opening weekend. As it also just so happens to boast an ensemble cast that includes Robbie, the film bombing has been drawing comparisons to Amsterdam, David O. Russell’s comedy thriller that also flopped hard at the box office in October.

But many fans of Robbie don’t appreciate seeing her singled out for these films underperforming. People are taking to social media to defend Robbie, insisting that her performances in both of these films are bright spots that played no factor in either film bombing. Many fans also point out that both films have large ensemble casts of which Robbie is just one part, wondering why the other cast members aren’t getting as much attention. Some suggest that it’s misogyny at play, suggesting that mentioning Robbie’s name while ignoring top-billed star Brad Pitt is an example of this.

Margot Robbie Fans Come to Her Defense

“the way they blame her for these flops like they arent also led by male movie stars who been in the game longer than her,” one person writes on Twitter.

“That’s what’s called Hollywood misogyny, they always protect their male actors male Abuser’s included, let this be a rude Awakening for Margot Robbie who thinks she’s part of the ‘Hollywood boys club’ she’s not, as Hollywood would always protect their male stars not females,” responds someone else.

Another tweet reads, “So much of the ‘BABYLON BOMBED!’ narrative has been centered around Margot Robbie “not being a movie star/a draw” and yet… Brad Pitt, an Oscar winner who has been in the biz twice as long as her and was first billed, has come out relatively unscathed? Huh?”

And as someone else puts it, “A LOT of people out here dragging Margot Robbie because Babylon bombed at the box office. The misogyny is loud and clear. Don’t blame the writers, directors, producers for a lousy movie…blame the single female lead.”

Babylon is now playing in movie theaters, but probably not for very long. You can see the official trailer along with some more reactions about the film’s box office shortcomings below.
