The planned Pirates of the Caribbean reboot with Margot Robbie is apparently no longer happening, as the actress recently revealed that the project has fallen through. That leaves the current state of the franchise unknown, as it’s not entirely clear what the powers that be at Disney hope to do with the movie series next. It does seem like a good possibility that Disney noticed the immense fan support for Johnny Depp and the interest in getting him back into the franchise, which could have cast doubt on the potentiality for success with rebooting the series without him.

In any case, there are many Depp fans who are wondering if dropping the Robbie reboot is a sign of creative plans changing for Pirates of the Caribbean. While there hasn’t been any indication that Depp has met with Disney about doing another film, there is nevertheless an outpouring of posts on social media with fans theorizing that this could be the situation. Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean have since been getting a lot of attention as fans renew their campaign for Captain Jack Sparrow to return in a new movie.

This does not appear to be a slight against Robbie, as it seems that the reaction would have been the same regardless of who was attached to appear in the reboot. What has Depp fans upset is how he said he was fired by Disney from his role in the franchise over allegations that a jury has now agreed to be phony. Some of the online posts even have fans saying they’d welcome Robbie into the franchise, but only if Depp’s Jack Sparrow also appears in the film, as moving forward with the series without him just doesn’t feel right for so many fans. It has even resulted in the popular hashtag #NoJohnnyNoPirates.

Fans Theorize Disney Sunk Margot’s Reboot for Johnny’s Return

“I’ll said it once I’ll say it again, Johnny Depp has carried the Pirates franchise on his back for YEARS, even if it’s been confirmed that Margot Robbie (which she’s an phenomenal actress and I love her) but it wouldn’t be the same without him in it,” one Depp fan says on Twitter acknowledging the latest update on Pirates 6.

“Bringing Margot Robbie was likely a contingency plan to salvage a little more money from the franchise after Depp was cancelled,” says another fan on Twitter, thinking Disney’s planning something with Depp. “Now that Depp’s been exonerated beyond anyone’s expectations, and printing money in everything he does, Disney is likely rethinking this contingency.”

Another tweet reads: “Disney cancelled Johnny Depp for being abused by Amber Heard. In turn,Johnny Depp refuses to return to Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Disney scraps Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney must have realised that Johnny Depp is the key element of the said franchise.”

Figuring that both Robbie and Depp could star in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, another fan pitches, “Pirates of the Caribbean where Margot Robbie is Johnny Depps lost child and they go on m adventure together and he hands off the franchise to her gracefully. Easy.”

Back in May, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that conversations with Robbie were still happening, but with the tide turning with Depp’s legal battle with Amber Heard, there seemed to be a promising update on the potential of Jack Sparrow’s return. Bruckheimer claimed that there were two different scripts in the works for Pirates of the Caribbean films, which included one with Robbie and one without. He didn’t elaborate on the second script, only saying that the “future is yet to be decided” when it comes to possibly getting the character to return one day. However, the biggest hurdle at this point may be in getting Depp to agree to come back, as he previously testified that he would never return to the franchise after his firing left him feeling betrayed.
