Legendary actor Mark Hamill has had a long and storied career in voice acting, taking on even more roles in animation and video-games than in live-action films and television. Among his most recognizable voice roles is the Joker, the beloved DC Comics villain who is almost as popular as Batman himself. Beyond that, Hamill has been actively voice acting for almost five decades, and has built up quite the filmography.

Boasting an impressive vocal range, Hamill’s voice roles are distinctive, and he brings a unique charisma to the characters he plays. His performances have brought him international acclaim and much attention has been paid to how he creates his iconic voices. Here are Mark Hamill’s best voiceover performances, ranked.

8 Arnim Zola in Ultimate Spider-Man

     Marvel Animation

Arnim Zola is a HYDRA scientist turned artificial intelligence, a man whose brain occupies a computer that carries out his will. Hamill’s accent and intonation, combined with a robotic modulation of his voice, brings this character to life. What could have been a stiff facsimile of a former genius feels much more vibrant with Hamill’s performance. Hamill is frequently tapped to play villainous characters, and with Ultimate Spider-Man, it’s his signature haughty tone that makes this character a success.

7 Fear Feaster in Adventure Time

     Cartoon Network

Fear Feaster is a short-lived character on Adventure Time, appearing as a manifestation of Finn’s fear. The two have a hilarious back-and-forth in the episode revolving around Finn’s fear of the ocean. Hamill’s mastery of a deep vocal buzz gives this character an inhuman quality, and hearing the verbal tête-à-tête between Feaster and Finn is elevated by the absurdity of the former’s voice. Those few minutes of screen time are used to great effect.

6 Master Eraqus in Kingdom Hearts

     Square Enix

A stern but caring mentor, Master Eraqus is the instructor of Terra, Ventus, and Aqua in the Kingdom Hearts story. Appearing in three of the Kingdom Hearts games, the character is known for his staunch opposition to evil and cruelty, as well as his cold but affectionate disposition. Hamill’s performance in these games is more subtle and controlled than many of his other roles. As a result, he is able to communicate a poise and dignity befitting Eraqus’ personality.

5 Chucky in Child’s Play

     Orion Pictures

2019’s Child Play is a disappointing entry into the Chucky mythos, which has now expanded into a television series called Chucky. Despite some intriguing new additions to the Chucky mythos, a lackluster screenplay without satisfying payoffs makes this a forgettable film. However, Mark Hamill’s performance as the doll, who now operates according to an internal AI, is the highlight of the movie. Balancing a youthful curiosity with a creepy robotic intonation, Hamill’s performance lends some genuinely scary qualities to the Chucky doll. Hamill’s uneven tone and flat inflection are effective at portraying a fundamentally inhuman creature trying to mimic humanity.

4 Skips in Regular Show

     Cartoon Network Studios

The stoic, wisecracking Skips is one of the most lively characters in a series full of funny and lively characters. Regular Show’s lighthearted comedy is the perfect stage for Skips, whose low rumbling growl of a voice is as comforting as the character himself. An immortal Yeti, Skips is as wise as a god and just as competent. Despite being somewhat sidelined, Hamill makes each of Skip’s appearances feel memorable and a breath of fresh air from the wonderful stupidity of Mordecai and Rigby.

3 Colonel Muska in Castle in the Sky

     Studio Ghibli

English dubs are a famously difficult part of bringing international content to English audiences, as written by Fiction Horizon, made worse by the plethora of monotonous, forgettable dubs in existence. Attempting to recreate the brilliance of an original performance in Japanese, Hamill’s performance in Castle in the Sky brings out the raw desperation and greed of the character. Muska attempts to take control of the kingdom of Laputa for his own gain, and has a Machiavellian characterization about him. Who better than to portray this iconic villain than Hamill, who excels at bringing villains to life?

2 Firelord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender

     Nickelodeon Animation

For most of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Firelord Ozai is a shapeless specter that threatens to plunge the world into further violence if Aang and his friends don’t stop him. A warmongering dictator, Ozai is also an incredibly powerful Firebender and father to Zuko, one of the main characters of the series. Hamill’s performance nails the twisted charisma and dangerous ignorance of the character. His sneering indifference and need for control come crumbling down during his final showdown with Aang, when his desperation and ruthlessness reach an all-time high thanks to Hamill’s commitment.

1 The Joker in Various Batman Media

     Rocksteady Games

Hamill’s Joker is almost inseparable from the character, thanks to the numerous times Hamill has appeared in the role. Due to a long career spent in intimacy with this character, Hamill’s performance has evolved through the years and taken on new and more sinister qualities with each iteration. One of the most notable examples is Joker from the Batman Arkham series of video games, in which the Joker is a constant presence in Batman’s mind, adding commentary to the player’s surroundings. His signature high-pitched cackle and gleeful indignation have become an integral part of the character, and an aspect that is incredibly difficult to recreate without Hamill behind the scenes.
