There are two things certain when it comes to Star Wars conversations on social media; mention of The Star Wars Holiday Special will instigate a debate that can last for weeks, and Mark Hamill will usually make a contribution to the discussion. This week both of those things combined when Hamill responded to a question posed on Twitter as to what an unpopular opinions people have about Star Wars, to which Hamill replied, in a seemingly knowing way, that the Star Wars Holiday Special is underappreciated. As you can imagine, this gained quite a bit of attention from his followers.
For the sake of clarity, it is likely that Hamill is not actually giving his personal opinion, but is playing along with the “unpopular opinion” game, as in the past he has openly mocked the Holiday Special. Back in 2020 during the Presidential debate, Hamill tweeted a comment saying, “That debate was the worst thing I’ve seen & I was in the Star Wars Holiday Special.” It is just as well known that the actor likes to have a laugh on his social media postings, and if there was anything likely to get a reaction, then that single opinion would be it.

While Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting new Holiday Specials, including the expected Werewolf by Night entry in October and Guardians of the Galaxy in December, back when the Star Wars franchise decided to put out their Holiday Special it would not be met with quite the same enthusiastic reaction. Instead, the short, hard to get hold of episode became legendary for all the wrong reasons and at one point it could only be seen on grainy bootleg VHS copies. However, now those who want to put themselves through their paces can find the animated section from the special on Disney+ and the rest of it is available on various sites around the internet.
Mark Hamill Is Always Happy to Share Star Wars Related Posts on Social Media
Although he has been posting on Twitter for a decade, Mark Hamill has only this year managed to claim his own name as his handle after years of being known as @HamillHimself, and he was quick to let everyone know that he was happy to finally be sharing his observations, behind the scenes photos and secrets and frequent joke posts under his own name.
Last month, Hamill shared some behind the scenes photos taken on the set of Star Wars: A New Hope to celebrate the late Alec Guiness’ birthday, praising the actor for teaching him so much about acting during their time working together on the movie. Of course, Guiness was the first actor to play Obi-Wan Kenobi on screen, appearing in all three movies of the original trilogy before Ewan McGregor took over for the prequels. McGregor will be reprising his role in the upcoming Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which premieres next month. For those interested in what Hamill thinks of the new addition to the Star Wars canon, keep an eye on his Twitter account at the end of May as he is sure to share his opinion then.
