Mark Ruffalo has been a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last decade, and the actor is continuing his role with She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Ruffalo knows his way around a motion-capture suit, as he consistently turns into the violent green monster, Hulk, in every appearance he makes. Since his arrival in Avengers: Endgame, Ruffalo has spent even more time in mo-cap suits, playing the Professor Hulk variant of the character, who almost entirely stays within the giant green body.

With ten years of motion-capture work, the actor admits to Metro that technology sometimes takes the forefront for audiences when they should be focusing on the performance. Although he believes CGI can be a ’little dehumanizing,’ Ruffalo was happy to be there at the inception of it.

Andy Serkis, of course, voiced and captured Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and has since become one of the most celebrated motion-capture actors of all time. However, Ruffalo’s involvement in the CGI landscape can’t be overlooked, as his portrayal of Hulk in the highly successful MCU franchise has helped to push the technology forward.

“I was there at the inception of it, in a lot of ways — I mean, behind Andy Serkis — but consistently doing it, so I know it pretty well and I know how it’s developed. I know how to act inside that bubble, which can be a little dehumanizing at times. Sometimes the technology starts to take the front seat when it really should be the performance and how we bring our humanity to that austere environment.”

Mark Ruffalo Admits There are Some Similarities Between Himself and The Hulk

Although the Hulk is a menacing green giant, Mark Ruffalo admits there are some similarities between himself and the iconic character. No, the actor doesn’t smash buildings to pieces or fight otherworldly gods, but he’s lost his temper before and knows what it’s like to destroy something you enjoyed. Ruffalo tells Metro he ‘really related to the Hulk as a kid and it’s been the same way through my life.’

Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Hulk has been spot on since his introduction in the 2012 mega-hit, The Avengers. Part of the reason may have been the actor’s connection to his role and the authenticity he brings to the part. You can watch Ruffalo reprise his role as the Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ comedy series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, arriving on the streaming service on Aug 18.

“It was always interesting to me to see those parts of you that are so disparate and in conflict with each other. That was what I always loved about Hulk. Even when I was a little kid I’d go into a rage and then afterwards I’d be like, ‘Oh, why did I break my model? I just trashed my favorite toy.’ So I really related to the Hulk as a kid and it’s been the same way through my life - you wrestle with anger and self-destructive behavior and then being left with your more wise self, you think, ‘Man, what was I doing?’”
