Marvel has released a brief trailer for their upcoming sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to celebrate the highly anticipated MCU installment being just 2 months away from release. Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will further unleash the multiverse upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is expected to make big changes to the franchise.

The footage gives us another glimpse at the chaos that will ensue when Doctor Strange enters the multiverse, an element that was first introduced in the Disney+ series Loki before being explored further in the recent Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thus, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finds Dr. Stephen Strange, with the help of both old and new mystical allies, traveling into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary…who looks suspiciously like himself.

Now that the likes of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers have passed on and retired, the MCU needs a new hero to step up and take the lead. That hero is Doctor Strange, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently describing The Master of the Mystic Arts as the “anchor” of the franchise.

“Benedict has turned this character into an icon, appearing in a historic three of the top six films of all time,” Feige said. “It’s been quite a journey. I remember our very first meeting was set up as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great character, and before we could, he said ‘So tell me about Doctor Strange,’ because you knew. Because somewhere you knew what this could be and you’ve always seen the tremendous potential in this character. Because of that, you’ve become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the Multiverse.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the 28th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Sam Raimi and written by Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just one of several hugely exciting upcoming Marvel projects, with Phase 4 made up of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), The Marvels (2023), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), and Fantastic Four.
