Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds made everybody’s day when he suddenly dropped the news that Hugh Jackman will reprise the role of Wolverine in the upcoming sequel, Deadpool 3. Quickly, Marvel fans took to social media to respond to the idea of Jackman making an X-Men comeback, and it seems that everyone is hugely excited to see the actor once again sport the spiky hair and adamantium claws.

Ryan Reynolds suddenly dropped the announcement that Wolverine will join the sequel yesterday, taking to social media to confirm that Deadpool 3 will bring back Hugh Jackman. “Hey, everyone. We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we have been working extremely hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Reynolds said in the video. “I had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character. Find new depth and motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart.”

After revealing that he has no ideas for where to take the follow-up, Jackman is seen walking past in the background. “Hey Hugh. You wanna play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks the X-Men star. “Yeah, sure Ryan,” Jackman casually responds. Needless to say, it is a return that nobody was expecting.

Deadpool & Wolverine Will Now Join the MCU

Fans are so to see Deadpool and Wolverine share the big screen that some have even stated that, after feeling some disappointment with the latest offerings from the MCU, this has pulled them back in.

Not everyone is on board with the idea, however. Some Wolverine fans are concerned that Jackman’s return in Deadpool 3 will undermine the character’s conclusion in Logan —a conclusion that many hold high as one of the best examples of a comic book movie.

Of course, there are those who have emerged to assuage these concerns…

Finally, it’s worth remembering that Wolverine and Deadpool have shared the big screen before. Though that was in the critically mauled 2009 outing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so maybe it isn’t worth remembering after all.

Not much is yet known about Deadpool 3, outside of it adding Wolverine, of course, but Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has teased what audiences can expect of the threequel. “How do we elevate it in the way we’ve been able to with Civil War, and Infinity War and Ragnarok? It’s very fun to be in the world of the Ryan Reynolds show,” Feige said.

Deadpool 3 writer Rhett Reese, meanwhile, has revealed that, despite joining the MCU, Deadpool 3 will be R-rated. “Don’t worry about that. They’ve been very supportive with regard to that,” he said. “Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing because, obviously, we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success, and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully, it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Directed by Shawn Levy, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 is now scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
