There has been a lot of speculation about which Marvel projects will be releasing this year, and a new post on Marvel’s Japan website seems to have confirmed that What If…? season 2 and Secret Invasion will be among the TV series release on Disney+ this year. With Spider-man: No Way Home and Hawkeye bringing 2021 to a close for Marvel on a massive high, all eyes immediately turned to what is coming next for the MCU, and it has been now virtually confirmed that there is indeed a lot coming in the next 12 months, making it another epic year for Marvel fans.
The closing out of the Infinity Saga in 2019 set up an uncertain future for the MCU, with the huge box office results of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home leaving fans with questions over what could possibly be coming next that would keep up the momentum. The Covid pandemic certainly gave Marvel a little bit of breathing space, as rather than heading straight into Phase Four, fans were kept waiting a long time to see where the MCU was heading next, but we now know that along with many new characters and returnees, the biggest thing coming to the franchise is the introduction of the multiverse.

Now we appear to have been given an exact schedule of what will be filling in the gaps between the multiverse adventures coming in 2022, and it all appears to begin with Moon Knight’s arrival in March. If the release schedule holds, we will see She-Hulk, I Am Groot and What If…? season 2 arriving between the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in May and Thor: Love and Thunder in July, followed by Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion between Thor and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November. Many of these shows were already known or hinted at, but the biggest takes from this is the confirmation of the second season of What If…? and the Samuel L. Jackson-led Secret Invasion will both be arriving this year.
What If…? and Secret Invasion Will Have Many Ties to Other Marvel Projects
Marvel’s What If…? is probably one of the easiest series for Marvel Studios to produce as its animated format removes the need for actors to actually have to travel for filming, with most voiceovers currently being recorded remotely due to the Covid pandemic. While there is no idea of what story will be told this time around, there is a strong chance that’s it will be linked to events of the Doctor Strange sequel that will be released just ahead of the series.
Secret Invasion began production at the end of last year, around the same time as The Marvels also kicked off filming. The project is one of the bigger stories and ambitious projects of Marvel’s TV output, but there has been an almost complete lockdown on any details or leaks coming during the filming of the series. Currently, all that has been seen are some social media posts by Jackson, who has frequently shared images of himself in various apparel on his Twitter account.
While times are still tricky, and there is no guarantee that we will not see some further delays in release dates, this latest information seems to be the most concrete news seen yet as to what 2022 holds in store for the MCU.
