Following the tragic death of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, fans have mourned long enough to seek a replacement. MCU seems to have heeded viewers’ wishes with the recent San Diego Comic-Con announcement about the Marvel Disney+ series. Riri Williams, later known as Iron Heart, made her cinematic debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a gifted innovator who created a flying suit and fought alongside Wakandans against Atlanteans.

It may be tempting to label her Tony Stark’s successor upon seeing her achieve such remarkable progress at such a young age. However, it would be impolite and premature to bestow the Iron Man’s mantle on her. It’s not a bad idea, given Riri Williams’ intellectual and sarcastic parallels with Tony Stark. While it’s unclear whether Riri will take over the mantle of Iron Man, here’s what we know about Marvel’s Ironheart and Riri Williams.

Riri Williams and Her Comics History as Ironheart

     Marvel Comics

Riri Williams, according to Marvel Comics, was raised by her mother and stepfather after her father passed away. Riri’s brilliance was discovered during a test when she was just five years old; seemingly, she possessed super-genius-level intelligence. As she grew up, she became interested in technology and progressively invented various machines that were somewhat sophisticated for the period. During the Skrull invasion on Earth, she is rescued by Iron Man, and she has looked up to him and followed in his footsteps ever since.

After developing a suit of armor by reverse engineering Stark’s design using materials stolen from campus, she is confronted by security. As a result, she flees the university while wearing the suit, and upon returning home after performing a few good deeds by apprehending criminals, she discovers Tony Stark at her residence.

Riri assists him against Carol Danvers during the second superhero Civil War, which subsequently renders Stark comatose. She does, however, briefly assume the responsibilities of Iron Man in order to fill the void and carry on his legacy.

Riri Williams’ Powers and Evolution Throughout Marvel Comics

Riri resembles Tony Stark in many aspects, and it is not an exaggeration to state she possesses the same arsenal of skills as Tony. Ironheart’s armor has experienced enormous alterations in Marvel Comics, much like Iron Man’s, assisting her evolution throughout. MK1 is the name of her first outfit, which is similar to Tony’s first suit in the 2008 film Iron Man, which is a true classic.

She redesigned and built two additional suits, MK2 and MK3, after filling in for Tony while he was in a coma, which turned out to be impressive thanks to the assistance of AI Stark and her learning capability from previous failures. Though her first suit armor was unrefined and clunky, it provided her with many ideas for subsequent suits. It granted her extraordinary strength, magnetic abilities, and the capacity to generate an energy bubble that trapped foes within it. These early skills turned deadly after a few careful enhancements. She created energy blasts from her palm and many other valuable features using a computerized copy of Tony Stark’s mind.

Despite her youth and lack of expertise with super villains, Riri encounters a slew of foes, including Animax, a mutant criminal who can summon rampaging creatures at a whim. She also battles various iconic Marvel villains, including Rhino, Armadillo, and Lady Octopus, and, surprisingly, defeats them all. She has yet to face defeat, and it soon comes in the guise of Will-o-the-Wisp, who knocks her unconscious during the battle, and she survives thanks to AI Stark calling the Avengers for help.

Although she confronts even more frightening opponents later in the story, including Thanos, who leaves her armor in ruins, she matures as a person and superhero, ultimately saving millions of lives.

Ironheart’s Future in Marvel Cinematic Universe

     Marvel Studios

With her surprising cameo in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri Williams has hinted that she would have a presence in the following MCU phases. The question is, to what extent and in what ways will she influence the story from here on out? In the comics, she was one of the most prominent superheroes that worked with Champions led by Ms. Marvel and even engaged with Ten Rings, overwhelming and forcing them to flee during the Wellspring crisis.

Despite the fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe does not literally follow the story of the comics, it expands on the idea, which means Riri Williams will appear in several roles in the upcoming films.

Riri Williams will get her own mini-TV series titled Ironheart in addition to her influential cameo in Black Panther 2. Depending on how Marvel has been introducing all the young heroes, like Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau, Riri will play a crucial role in the following phases, particularly in Phase 6, which will once again unite the Avengers against the Kang Dynasty.

The MCU is currently shaping up to unveil an entirely new storyline teeming with even more fearsome villains than Thanos, which is why we need heroes like Riri Williams, who, although not yet ready to step in for Tony Stark, can become her own Ironheart as a superhero that millions admire and cherish.
