In the late 1970s and from within the deep multiversal world that is Marvel Comics, the artist Jack Kirby brought to life a human-like being from the Stone Age. With the blunt name of Moon Boy, this otherworldly cave dweller resides on another planet not our own and ends up befriending a young bright red dinosaur after saving its mother from a rival tribe called the Killer-Folk. Giving the young prehistoric creature the nickname of Devil from that point on, the duo would travel to different times and places, even encountering Godzilla and the Fallen Angels, a spin-off team from the X-Men franchise. While this man and monster combo was never popular like other superheroes, Marvel Studios is putting a new spin on the character for the modern age.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

With a sneak peek video being released on January 3 through Disney Channel’s official YouTube page, a brand new animated series called Marvel’s Moon Girl and The Devil Dinosaur will be showcasing a new version of the sensational duo starting on February 10. Leaping out of the newest iteration that was released in 2015 by writers Amy Reede and Brandon Montclare, the audience will follow along with the adventures of thirteen-year-old preteen genius Lunella Lafayette after she accidentally teleports Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City.

In this modern setting, the duo team up and ward off all sorts of villainy from the Lower East Side. Lunella Lafayette comes to life with the help of Diamond White, the same actress who is a series regular on The Bold and the Beautiful and was cast in numerous titles relating to Tyler Perry’s Madea movies. If this trailer is any indication of what’s to come for this series, viewers should be ready to expect action-packed fight scenes that are filled with bright colors and daring art styles that will entertain both younger and older audiences.

Moon Girl Fights Back Through a Mess

     Disney Television Animation

The almost three-minute preview for the animated series created by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland starts off by showing us Moon Girl cowering behind a counter in a roller skating rink, overwhelmed by the menacing overwhelming presence and power of Graviton. The classic Marvel villain has all the attendees suspended in the air with gravitonium, a metallic putty-like substance that affects gravity. Stalling for time behind the food bar, Lunella solemnly questions her determination. But then remembering wise words from her grandmother Mimi, who is voiced by Alfre Woodard, Lunella is reminded of her special ingredient. Armed with the power of music, Moon Girl drives a cassette into a player that quickly cuts into the screen and the song “Sweatpants” by Childish Gambino plays over the entire ensuing battle.

While we get to see a glimpse of the Devil Dinosaur, who is seemingly drifting by in one of the villain’s gravitonium vessels, Moon Girl smoothly blades across the floor evading every one of Graviton’s shots in spectacular fashion. The color is also noticeable here with bold green and purple patterns defining the hero and villain of this story. Lunella, in all her acrobatic glory, runs straight up an incoming wall and backflips over the chasing antagonist. Not only does the Devil Dinosaur yell out for the main heroine to finally fight back, but Moon Girl’s best friend, Casey also tells her to stop all the bobbing and weaving and make a stand. Having a memorable role in Prime Video’s Sneaky Pete back in May 2019 starring Giovanni Ribisi, Libe Barer voices this character. Having supposedly deduced a weakness about Gravitron, Lunella tells her allies to just wait.

Saving the Day with a Little Quick Thinking

With the gravitonium shots finally catching up to Moon Girl as she dazzlingly skates around the roller skating rink, she loses control of her stride and winds up on the floor with the villain quickly aiming his hand cannon right at her face. Right when it looks like all hope is lost, the quick talking and even faster moving Moon Girl has made Gravitron waste all his ammo on trying to shoot her when she was bouncing around the ever-rising skating rink, Roll With It. At this point, the momentum of the battle shifts.

With Casey congratulating Moon Girl on a quick-witted verbal comeback after Gravitron initially thought this was the end for her, Devil Dinosaur and Moon Girl’s manager come into the shot once more as the audience watches Moon Girl gain the upper hand, pushing him back with attacks until he’s down for the count. With Casey coming out from hiding once there is no more danger, she asks her costumed friend to start the fight over since she didn’t successfully record the beginning with her phone. With all the people in the rink now rapidly falling from the sky due to Gravitron’s power being diminished, Lunella looks at her friend with a very unamused look to close out the exhilarating and jam-packed preview. With this trailer showing off the comedic stylings of all the supporting characters and Moon Girl’s very quick thinking, the show seems to be a blast already.

With additional names like Sasheer Zamata from the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Jermain Fowler from Judas and the Black Messiah, and Gary Anthony Williams who recently voiced Mr. McFly in Netflix’s Oddballs all giving life to other characters in Marvel’s Moon Girl and The Devil Dinosaur, comic book fans will surely not be disappointed when the show premieres on Disney Channel starting February 10.
