There is always a lot of speculation around the release of upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. While Marvel Studios has a long list of premiere dates readily available for their movies, Disney+ TV shows are a little more secretive. For that reason, a blog post shared on Disney+’s Japan site has suggested that only three Marvel series are currently confirmed for 2023, way short of the six or seven that have been previously hinted at in Marvel’s recent Expo and Comic-Con appearances.
While similar posts have been made in the past, and later removed and replaced with new timeline announcements, for now The Direct noted that only Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2 and Ironheart currently have a place in the 2023 schedule. This would mean that others including What If…? Season 2, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos and X-Men ’97 would not feature at all in the coming year’s offerings.

Of course, this could simply be Marvel only including the shows that they are certain to have ready to air to avoid the need to constantly alter scheduled release dates, something that has been happening constantly over the last two years following a return to filming after the Covid shutdown. However, the list as it stands does not categorically mean that no other Marvel shows will arrive in the coming 12 months, as we have also seen recently that Marvel are not above dropping titles at short notice.
Why is There A Difference Between MCU Movie and TV Show Releases?
Marvel Studios
Since moving the MCU into Disney+ territory, Marvel Studios’ release schedule on the platform has always been a little bit more of a mystery than its far-reaching list of movie release dates. What the strategic difference is between the two is unclear, as Marvel fans are always eager to hunt out production schedules, casting sheets and more in order to determine what a new project could be heading to screens.
Last year, Disney+ Japan put out an image of all 2022 MCU projects which included Secret Invasion being released before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We now know that Secret Invasion was delayed during production, which set it back from an expected Fall 2022 release to Spring 2023. This also impacted the positioning of The Marvels, which was swapped with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as it is thought to be connected to the Secret Invasion storyline.
While fans who had expected to see Secret Invasion play out this year were disappointed, Kevin Feige delivered an unexpected surprise when announcing Werewolf By Night just a few weeks before the Halloween special debuted on Disney+. For this reason, it is not easy to keep track of which MCU shows will be arriving month on month, but it certainly keeps fans on their toes.
Given Marvel Studios’ ever expanding list of in development projects, it is not likely that only three Disney+ series will be arriving this year. There are already rumors that another Halloween Special is being worked on for this October, and many of the other expected shows could be announced officially closer to their time of airing.
