The crossover between the MCU and Sony’s Spider-man-based universe of villains has been a brief and unstable thing so far. While it has included some good things – Spider-Man: No Way Home – and the not so good – Morbius’ post-credits scenes – it is clear that the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony is not currently working out in Sony’s favor, as while the Venom movies have done well at the box office, other films are not pulling in the same level of interested. One reason for this could be that Sony’s Spider-Man universe does not currently feature its own Spider-Man. That could have been very different, with new reports suggesting that Tom Holland’s web-slinger was blocked from appearing in Venom by Marvel Studios.

The Heavy Spoilers YouTube channel detailed reports suggesting that Tom Holland could have been part of Sony’s universe much earlier. As his only appearance so far has been nothing more than in a news report on a TV at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage – a scene that should be clarified took place in the MCU after Tom Hardy’s Venom was pulled there by Doctor Strange’s Spider-Man: No Way Home spell – it still leaves the question whether there is a Spider-Man in the SSMU at all.

The report claims that Holland was all set to make a cameo appearance in Venom, but Marvel stopped that. It seems though, that while Sony was not allowed to take Holland away from the MCU, Kevin Feige was able to leave that little piece of Venom in the MCU after the No Way Home post-credits scene thanks to the renewed contract between the two studios, which the report says had “a stipulation that the franchises connect to the MCU.”

How Can the MCU and Sony Spider-Man Universes Continue to Cross Over?

     Sony/Marvel

The crossovers of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius have only been made possible by incursions of the multiverse in the MCU. Once the Multiverse Saga ends, how exactly these two differently established worlds can ever come together is unclear.

With a small piece of Venom having made its way into the MCU, it seems clear that Marvel Studios will not need to see Tom Hardy’s iteration of Venom cross over into the MCU when they can make their own version of the character in their own time. In addition, Vulture appearing in Morbius’ post-credits scene didn’t really make much sense, and how exactly that will play out is yet to be fully explained.

There is, of course, a very simple solution, which could see the Sony Spider-Man Universe build up its roster of villains to have one big cross-over event with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as one of the final movies in the Multiverse Saga. However, that seems to be a lot of effort to go to when so many people just don’t seem to be that interested in Sony’s collection of villains without a clear sign of Spider-Man in that universe. One thing for sure is that there will be a lot of people at Sony hoping that Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web can help turn the recent disappointment of Morbius around.
