Actor Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire in the hit Netflix series The Sandman, recently revealed that filming for the next episodes will begin this summer. While the renewal of the series was highly anticipated by fans, the process of getting it green-lit took several months. The Sandman follows the story of Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), also known as Dream, who, after a century of imprisonment by Roderick Burgess, returns to his kingdom and goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. The series was well received by both fans and critics alike, and it has something for everyone, whether one has followed the comic books or not.

The series is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel of the same name. The show’s creator, Gaiman, is also involved in the production, guaranteeing that the series stays faithful to the original material. In a clip posted by The Sandman fan page, Park also revealed that the series format is still being considered, and fans should not expect the next batch of episodes to be referred to as Season 2. However, Park teased that the next installment of The Sandman will come in a “cool way” and that the team is working hard to ensure it lives up to fans’ expectations.

“Netflix has not gone on record as calling it a Season 2, on purpose. And so, I will, from now on and in the future, and possibly until the end of the universe not refer to it as Season 2 until we know what it is. There is more Sandman coming in a really cool way, and it can take many forms, so we’re starting shooting in the summer, and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I’m really excited to share the format of what that might be with everybody eventually.”
Why The Sandman Renewal Took So Long
DC Entertainment & Netflix
Fans of The Sandman were eager to know if the series would be renewed for another season. However, it took a while for Netflix to confirm that the show would continue. According to Peter Friedlander, the head of UCAN scripted TV at Netflix, the delay was due to the company’s desire to align their creative vision for the next season with the showrunner and Neil Gaiman. He said they wanted to ensure that the next season would be as thoughtful and intentional as the first one, hence the time it took to get everything in order. Friedlander also expressed his excitement for the next season and believes that the show’s creators will deliver something extraordinary and iconic that will connect with the audiences.
The Sandman’s second installment is in the works, and you can stream all of Season 1 on Netflix.
“We wanted to spend the time to get creatively aligned around what would be the next, best experience with The Sandman, and because of that, we wanted to spend the time with [showrunner Allan Heinberg] and Neil and really talk through and be thoughtful about what the approach should be — because Season 1 is also very thoughtful and intentional. So that was really what took the extra time, is to get our ducks in a row.
I’m very excited about what we have in store and we have made some great decisions around where this will go. So it’s a stay-tuned and watch. Like you, I am a major ‘Sandman’ fan and to be able to watch Neil and Allan do what they do is extraordinary. I think what they did with Season 1 — it’s refreshing, it’s breathtaking, it’s iconic. It’s all of those descriptions and to know that it connected with audiences is just so rewarding.”
