Stranger Things continues to control the music numbers! After causing a resurgence of streams for Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” with the premiere of Season 4. After part 2 premiered this weekend, the show is having the same effect on Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.”
The scene involves Eddie and Dustin teaming up to distract the army of bats guarding Vecna’s home in the Upside-Down. Eddie plays Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” on the roof of Eddie’s barricaded trailer, with red lightning dancing behind him. It’s a truly metal moment!

According to People, as of Monday afternoon, “Master of Puppets” is climbing up on the charts! Currently, the heavy metal classic is on the number 12 spot in Spotify’s Top 50. This is especially impressive considering the song is over eight minutes in length! The band has not made an official statement on the song’s newfound popularity as of yet. But on July 1st, its official Twitter account retweeted an announcement post from the official Stranger Things account, which features Eddie’s solo!
Robert Trujillo, Metallica’s bassist, also made a post on her Instagram account. The 57-year-old made a proud dad statement, revealing that his 17-year-old son, Tye Trujillo, assisted in providing new guitar parts for the song. He also included a “big thanks to Kirk Hammett on helping,” which revealed the band’s lead guitarist also provided help in bringing the song to the show! Trujillo was not a member of the band at the time of the song’s release, at the time, the position was taken up by the late Cliff Burton. Burton tragically passed away in a car accident in 1986.

The inclusion of “Master of Puppets” in the show was, according to music supervisor Nora Felder, intentional from the start. According to Metallica Frontman, James Hetfield, the song was about drugs and the dangers of addiction. But the lyrics of the song could be woven into the arcs of both Eddie and Vecna. Nora explained to Variety how the themes tied together.

“Master of Puppets” debuted in 1986 and is the only single out of the album of the same name. The song itself is considered a beloved classic by Metallica fans of all ages and is frequently requested during tours and concerts. It was also reportedly Burton’s favorite song on the album. In more ways than one, it was a fitting choice for Eddie Munson during his big moment. A perfect follow-up to Max’s iconic run for her life.
