The long, long, long-gestating Masters of the Universe live-action reboot will tell the origin story of He-Man. Speaking with ScreenRant, current Masters of the Universe directors Aaron and Adam Nee have offered some insight into their “fun and color” approach to bringing the beloved 1980s tale to life on Netflix.

Netflix’s attempt to bring Masters of the Universe to screens has been fraught with backstage drama and dropouts. While Black Adam star Noah Centineo was originally tapped to play the role of He-Man, the actor ultimately walked away from the project. West Side Story’s Kyle Allen is now tapped to don the furry speedos of He-Man, and Aaron Nee believes he is the perfect actor to start the character’s heroic story from the beginning.

“I think with Masters of the Universe, for us, from growing up with it, we just wanted to make something that captured that fun and color and bright and vibrance and the empowerment that it gave little kids. We just wanted to capture that. So that’s what we hope to have.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

A reboot of Masters of the Universe has been in development since all the way back in 2007. A wide variety of different talent has been tied to the proposed movie, including Jon M. Chu, Richard Wenk, Terry Rossio, Chris McKay, McG, David S. Goyer, and many more. In 2019, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway were brought on board to rewrite the script, with Noah Centineo due to take on the lead role.

“Yeah, and Kyle’s perfect for it because we also want to take a new audience on this adventure. So we’re treating it as an origin story, and Kyle, there’s not a more perfect person to come in and embody that.”

After a whole lot of back and forth and behind-the-scenes problems, Masters of the Universe has now been re-rewritten by David Callaham. Callaham is best known for his work on Zombieland: Double Tap, Mortal Kombat, and the Marvel outing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Should everything work out well this time around, The Nee Brothers will direct the Masters of the Universe reboot, with Kyle Allen playing He-Man.

Netflix Loves the Masters of the Universe Right Now

The upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot is far from the only project associated with the franchise on the streaming giant that is Netflix. Last year saw the release of Kevin Smith’s animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which acts as a continuation of the original animated series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. A CGI revival, also titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, was released in 2021, with a second season landing on Netflix on March 3, 2022, and a third season planned for release on June 8, 2022.

Masters of the Universe fans can judge to work of The Nee Brothers when The Lost City is released on March 12, 2022. Starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, The Lost City finds a romance novelist kidnapped, with her bumbling cover model embarking on a rescue mission to save her.
