Streaming giant Netflix will be giving us all a gift this festive season, releasing their adaptation of Matilda the Musical on December 25. The release date has been officially revealed by Netflix, with Matilda the Musical set to star Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood alongside Academy Award winner Emma Thompson and will bring the 2010 musical adaptation of the book to the screen.
Netflix invites audiences to meet the exception to the rules in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, which follows the titular heroine (played by newcomer Alicia Weir), an extraordinary, mistreated child prodigy with a vivid imagination. Matilda is enrolled in a tyrannical school ruled over by the tyrannical Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), a principal who hates children and is determined to destroy the childhoods of all who enter the school gates.

After battling with her parents to go to school, Matilda finds herself at war once again as she dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is led by Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood, with the supporting cast made up of Emma Thompson as Miss Agatha Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Jennifer Honey, Andrea Riseborough as Mrs. Wormwood, Stephen Graham as Mr. Wormwood, Sindhu Vee as Mrs. Phelps, Lauren Alexandra as The Acrobat, and Carl Spencer as Magnus the Escapologist with Rudy Gibson, Maisie Mardle, and Mackenzie Brewster as some of Matilda’s classmates.
Based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, Matilda adapts the hugely popular stage musical version of the story. The musical has been running in London since 2011 and had a successful run playing on Broadway between 2013 and 2017. During its run, Matilda the Musical has won several Tony awards and been met with mass critical acclaim.
The show’s original director Matthew Warchus, whose previous credits include the 2014 biographical drama Pride, is at the helm for this adaptation for Netflix. Warchus will work from a script by Dennis Kelly, who wrote the stage show, which features music and lyrics from musician and comedian Tim Minchin.

Matilda The Musical is just one of many adaptations of the works of Roald Dahl set for release on Netflix following the streaming giant acquisition of the rights to the works of the iconic British writer. Netflix plans to develop projects revolving around such beloved titles as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James & The Giant Peach, The BFG, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and more, with Taika Waititi set to write, direct, and executive produce two animated series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
Once again, Matilda the Musical will become available for streaming on December 25, 2022. The musical movie will also receive a limited theatrical release in selected theaters on December 9, 2022.
