We’re just days away from the long-awaited release of The Batman, the latest movie from Warner Bros. to bring the brooding superhero to the big screen. This release follows many sneak peeks, teasers, and trailers hyping what will certainly be one of the biggest releases of the year. It’s the first solo Batman film to be released since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, with director Matt Reeves introducing a new incarnation of the character played by Robert Pattinson.

Other versions of Batman will still be explored in the DCEU, but Warner Bros. has pretty much let Reeves carry out his vision for The Batman without any studio interference. Speaking about the film with Collider, Reeves speaks very highly of the studio, noting that they were incredibly supportive of his pitch from the very start. The result is a movie that is exactly as the filmmaker had pictured it.

“What’s so interesting is that they, and to me, the experience on the film, they have been so incredibly supportive and they loved, from the inception, the pitch. Once I wanted to put it into this world and that I wanted to do a detective story noir and that whole thing, they were very responsive. They were very excited about that… They embraced it the whole time. There was never a moment where they said to me, are you sure? Let’s not. They really leaned into everything, and I’ve had the support to do exact … I mean, I have to say, this movie is exactly the movie I wanted it to be, and they have supported me all the way through it.

Matt Reeves Agreed With the Studio’s One Request for The Batman

While Warner Bros. was fully behind Matt Reeves, they did have one request they relayed to the director. In the interest in having The Batman play for as big an audience as possible, Reeves was told that the film needed to be rated PG-13. Fortunately, this wasn’t a problem at all for Reeves, as he had already gone into The Batman with that mindset. But that’s not to say he didn’t plan on pushing that PG-13 rating quite a bit.

Reeves co-wrote the screenplay for The Batman with Peter Craig. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis. It is set to be released in movie theaters on March 4, 2022.

“One thing they did do, which was my intention from the beginning, was they said, ‘Look, it’s important to us that the movie be PG-13. We want to make sure that we can get this … It’s a Batman movie, and we’re investing so much in it.” And I was like, ‘Well, in the Apes movies, I tried to sort of find that balance as well.’ They were meant to be sort of … They were obviously spectacle and grand entertainment, but there was a level of intensity. I felt like in that same way, I knew that we could push the boundaries of what you could do in a PG-13 movie and still deliver everything I wanted to do.”
