How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has become an absolute staple in the romantic comedy category since it premiered two decades ago. In honor of its 20th anniversary, on-screen lovers Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson sat down with Vanity Fair to talk about the movie and share how the film almost never happened and the surprising way it all came together.
It’s hard to picture anyone other than Kate Hudson playing the loveable, ambitious blonde darling Andie Anderson, but according to writer Burr Steers Gwyneth Paltrow was first pegged for the role, “Initially Gwyneth was attached to it, and then at some point, she must have had a conflict and had to pull out,” says Steers.

Kate Hudson, legendary rom-com queen, who recently had a hot take on the genre being dumbed down, was coming off her Oscar-nominated performance in Almost Famous and took over where Paltrow left off. However, finding her male counterpart to play the handsome executive, Benjamin Barry, wasn’t quite so quick. When McConaughey’s name finally did come up, Hudson recalled,

McConaghey recalled how unsure he was and how a surprising moment with a fortune-teller swayed the actor to accept, saying,
