Read Perry’s short statement regarding his bizarre and ill-judged words below.
Having been the subject of shock, anger, and everything in between following the reveal that Matthew Perry hates Keanu Reeves, the sitcom star has now stated that it was never really about Reeves at all. And that he simply picked a random name. A name that perhaps should have been his own.
“I’m actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.”

The drama began earlier this week when several excerpts from Perry’s upcoming memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, seemingly unveiled a perplexing sense of loathing that Perry feels towards Keanu Reeves. Reeves has seen a major resurgence in his career over the last few years thanks to the hugely successful John Wick franchise, and seems to be one of the kindest, most genuine A-listers in Hollywood.

“Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?” Perry says in the memoir. “River was a beautiful man inside and out and too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down."
If that were not already enough, Perry makes mention of Reeves later on when describing how he felt after hearing about the death of comedian Chris Farley. “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out. Keanu Reeves walks among us,” the excerpt reads.
So, do we believe that Matthew Perry used Keanu Reeves’ name randomly? If anything, this makes the situation even odder, considering that Perry begins by discussing the late River Phoenix, a known friend and collaborator of Reeves, before throwing Reeves’ name in seemingly without rhyme or reason. The “random name” defense would perhaps be more credible if Perry had not then used Reeves’ name again in another sentence that suggests Perry believes Reeves should been taken rather than the likes of River Phoenix or Chris Farley.
Whether Perry genuinely means this latest statement or whether he is simply reacting to the backlash he has undoubtedly suffered following the release of these excerpts, remains known only to him. In either case, the whole situation, and Perry’s use of Reeves’ name, remains odd and wholly unnecessary.
Regardless of how Matthew Perry may or may not feel, Keanu Reeves continues to be hugely popular with audiences. The beloved actor will reprise the role of the unstoppable hitman John Wick in the upcoming sequel John Wick: Chapter 4, which is set to be theatrically released in the United States on March 24, 2023.
