Henry Cavill has picked up another ringing endorsement to play James Bond. Matthew Vaughn, director of the new movie The King’s Man, recently addressed his possible involvement in the Bond franchise during a roundtable press event. Per Comicbook.com, the director said he doesn’t believe the Bond team will ever give him that call, but for what it’s worth, he’d want to see Cavill in that role.

The film Vaughn is referring to is Argyle, his next work that’s currently in production. It features Cavill as part of an ensemble cast that also includes Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Henry Cavill has been a very popular pick with fans to play James Bond for many years. He previously auditioned for the role before losing out to Daniel Craig for Casino Royale. At the time, the reason given was that Cavill was too young for the part. As it stands now, Cavill is the same age is Craig was when Craig started playing James Bond. The timing could not be any better for Cavill to take the role now, if age was really the only factor holding him back before.

For his part, Cavill has also made it clear that he’d be happy to play 007. He’s open to just joining the James Bond franchise in any capacity, even if that means playing the villain or another character. In various interviews, the actor has said that if Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Mike G. Wilson were interested in speaking with him, he’d be willing to take that call. Whether or not that ever happens remains to be seen, as there are many other possibilities that could potentially get to the role first. Tom Hardy in particular has been leading the betting odds.

“He would be amazing,” Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage co-star Naomie Harris said of Hardy playing 007. “He’s such a phenomenal actor. I’m such a huge fan of his and then working with him on Venom, I have even more respect for him. He’s just like, incredible, the physicality that he brings to the role is just extraordinary. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Another popular actor who wants to play James Bond is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It would be a full circle moment for him, as The Rock’s grandfather was in a James Bond movie. However, Johnson says he’s only interested in stepping into that franchise if he suits up in the tuxedo as James Bond, as he wouldn’t want to play the villain.
