The second season of Mayor of Kingstown has arrived on Paramount+. This follows a wait from fans who’ve been anticipating new episodes since season 1 debuted in 2021. Whether the show ends up moving forward with a third season remains to be seen, and will depend upon the viewership data and fan reception that is brought in by season 2.

In any case, series creators Hugh Dillon and Taylor Sheridan are prepared to keep this series going for a while longer yet if that’s what the fans and the people at Paramount+ want. In a new interview with Deadline, Dillon touched on the potential longevity of the series when asked about when a third season might begin filming. While the show has yet to be officially renewed, Dillon explains that he and Sheridan have ideas for “multiple seasons” of Mayor of Kingstown, and they’d be ready to start production on new episodes later this year if that renewal order ends up coming in. From the interview:

“Taylor and I have multiple ideas for multiple seasons. If everything went according to plan with Paramount+ and the rest of it, I would think that we’d start in August, September, maybe pre-production in the summer.”

Jeremy Renner’s Health Is Most Important

Of course, the health of series star Jeremy Renner is most important regarding Mayor of Kingstown. The actor could have a long road to recovery ahead of him after suffering extensive injuries from a snowplowing accident at the start of the year. Dillon spoke about how he learned about what happened with Renner and said how the “biggest thing” is that the actor gets better, noting the Mayor of Kingstown team will be there to help in any way they can.

In Mayor of Kingstown, Renner stars as Mike McLusky, a member of the powerful McLusky family who’s suddenly thrust into a position of power following an unexpected death of a relative. Per Paramount+, the series tackles “themes of systemic racism, corruption, and inequality” while providing a “stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.”

“I heard about it from one of the other producers. I saw it on the news and then he sent me a video. He’s very funny. I just think the world of that guy and I’m happy he’s surrounded by his family. Anything we can do to help, we will. That’s the biggest thing. He’s like family.”

In addition to Renner, the series stars Dianne Wiest, Hugh Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley, Nishi Munshi, and Aiden Gillen. Mayor of Kingstown season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+. You can watch the official trailer for the new season below.
