Mckenna Grace really came into her own as young lead in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but before her role as the granddaughter of Egon Spengler she appeared as a young Carol Danvers in 2019’s Captain Marvel. However, while there are plenty of fans who would love to see Grace reprising her role in The Marvels, it looks like there won’t be any flashbacks to Danvers’ childhood this time around.
The Marvel’s is set to hit cinemas next summer having completely filming earlier this year, and will see Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel being joined by fellow superheroes Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, who will be getting her own “made up name” in the movie. However, it looks like the film will be firmly focused on the current events of the MCU and not revisiting the past, as Grace suggested she will not be returning to the role of Young Carol Danvers, even though she would love to return to the franchise again. She told ComicBook.com:

Of course, while Grace would love to be part of the Marvel machine again, she is not resting on her laurels and is definitely carving herself a promising career in Hollywood as a rising star.
“Oh, my gosh, I wish. That would be so cool. I’ve always wanted to do a Marvel film. I did do Captain Marvel, but I have not come back since. And if I do, I will be honored. Hey, that’d be cool.”
Mckenna Grace Will Reprise Her Role As Phoebe Spengler In The Next Ghostbusters Sequel
Columbia Pictures, Ghost Corps, and The Montecito Picture Company
Having made quite an impact in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Mckenna Grace will be donning a proton pack once more in the sequel to 2021’s franchise revival. While original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman passed away earlier this year, but son Jason deftly took over directorial duties for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and will do so once again on the sequel, no doubt in dedication to his father who ushered in the franchise and kept it alive for almost forty years.
During the same interview, Grace commented on the sequel and how she has been constantly trying to find out something about the plot of the movie. However, it seems that Reitman isn’t giving anything away. She said:
“I’m constantly pressuring Jason Reitman, our director, I’m always trying to figure out what the story is. I literally have no ounce of a clue what the story is. If I knew about a Marvel film or if I knew about Ghostbusters, I’d be sitting here and I’d be like, ‘I have no clue, and it’s driving me nuts.’ I’m just excited to do a second one. I’m just excited to be Phoebe.”
Picking up three decades after the events of Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife brought back original Ghostbusters villain Gozer, and the sequel will bring back another icon of the franchise: the Ghostbusters firehouse. Last year’s hit ended with a post credits scene that saw Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) bringing Ecto1 back to Manhattan, and it seems that is where the action will take place when the sequel is released on December 20, 2023.
