X-Men being a part of the MCU makes fans wonder about who exactly will be in the new X-Men team. There are a lot of fun fan theories floating around about who will join the best new X-Men team up. But one of our favorites (even though he probably won’t get in) is a relatively new addition to the comics: Goldballs.

Fabio Medina was added to a new generation of X-Men around 2013. He was a bit of a silly character at first. Introduced alongside a few other mutants that seemed to have better powers, he had the strange ability to generate gold balls from any part of his body. They make a funny little “poink” noise when they do.

Goldballs seemed to be a character there for comic relief, but he ended up having one of the most impressive story arcs of any X-Man so far. He started out as an ineffective but endearing school kid and became one of the most essential X-Men to ever be a part of the comics. If Marvel is looking to tell the story of Krakoa and how the mutants freed themselves from persecution, then Goldballs would be an incredible mutant to have in this new group of X-Men. He would quite literally create a path to resurrecting the X-Men in the MCU.

Who Is Goldballs?

     Marvel Comics

Fabio Medina, AKA Goldballs, AKA Egg, was not a very impressive mutant when he first discovered his powers. But the people loved him. He always tried his hardest in a fight and remained loyal to his team and his family. Now he has discovered that he is one of the most important mutants in the universe.

When his powers manifested in San Diego after being robbed on the street, Cyclops was on the lookout for new mutants. Medina had scared a few people with his Goldballs powers, so when the cops showed up, they started to arrest him. Thankfully Cyclops showed up with his new team of X-Men to protect Goldballs and claim him as part of their race. The fight escalated when a few sentinels showed up, but the group was able to defeat them by working together. Once they were safe, Cyclops invited Goldballs to join the X-Men, and although he was initially reluctant, Medina accepted and ran away from San Diego.

After joining the X-Men, Goldballs was with the team when they visited Tempus, a time-manipulating mutant who also manifested her powers around the same time as Medina. There, they were attacked by Dormammu, the ancient entity that is often an enemy of Doctor Strange. After the group escaped Limbo, Medina was overwhelmed and demanded to be taken home. And when he returned, he realized his family couldn’t accept that he was a mutant.

He lost control of his powers and was taken into custody by Agent Dazzler of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cyclops was considered a terrorist at the time, so S.H.I.E.L.D. attempted to get a handle on him. They interrogated Medina about Cyclops’ location before Cyclops actually showed up to rescue him. Medina agreed to join the team again now that he realized he might not have anywhere to go. He was a media sensation for a short time and ended up going to school with Miles Morales for a time.

What Goldballs Can Do for the MCU

Goldballs did not have the most incredible history with the mutants when first starting off. He was mostly just a regular kid, even with his powers. It wasn’t until he moved to the mutant’s sentient island of Krakoa that his full potential was revealed.

He discovered that the gold balls he generated were actually infertile eggs that he was making from his own biological material. It was one of the most important discoveries in mutant history. He became part of a group called “The Five,” which could use the combined powers of five mutants to resurrect any deceased mutant in the world.

Charles Xavier created a backup of every mutant consciousness so the mutants could be resurrected at the exact time of their death, along with their personality and previous memories.

If the MCU intends to explore the more current storylines, and move away from the old X-Men movies Sony made, then they would be exploring this new storyline, starting just around the time Goldballs manifested his powers. The narrative progresses until the founding of this new mutant nation of Krakoa and the X-Men’s defense of their new island home.

Goldballs is one of the few mutants that has journeyed long through the X-Men’s history to discover how important he is to the greater narrative. Though he started as a regular person, he has become integral to the survival of mutants as a species.
