It’s safe to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to be one of if not the most successful and recognizable entertainment franchises in history. From the beginning of Phase 1 of The Infinity Saga up until the most recent films and shows in The Multiverse Saga, Marvel is a force to be reckoned with. The band of superheroes we know as the Avengers are played by some equally iconic actors. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man? Chris Evans’ Captain America? We honestly could not have imagined it any other way. Casting a Marvel superhero is a difficult process to get right. However, more often than not, Marvel has got their casting choices down to a science.

2008’s The Incredible Hulk is an often forgotten pre-Phase 1 project. In fact, it is hard for us to recall a Bruce Banner that is not played by Mark Ruffalo. However, Edward Norton played Hulk in the 2008 action film. When it came time to make the first Avengers movie, Marvel decided to go in a different direction, away from Norton’s portrayal of Bruce Banner, making way for Ruffalo to enter the MCU. Of course, the question remains: why? We detail why Ruffalo replaced Norton as The Hulk in this article.

Hulk in Marvel Comics

     Marvel

Who is The Hulk? Well, The Incredible Hulk is one of the most iconic superheroes in Marvel Comics, and the long history that the character has in the comic books makes for some great source material for the movies. Stan Lee created the character Bruce Banner, a soft-spoken scientist who is forever altered by intense exposure to gamma radiation. The Hulk comes out when Dr. Banner becomes angry and, in any situation, that is a recipe for disaster and establishes a great blueprint for a complex and intriguing character for audiences to fall in love with.

Edward Norton’s The Incredible Hulk

If you have yet to see The Incredible Hulk, we have a rundown of the movie ready for you. The Incredible Hulk movie from 2008 was a live-action portrayal of the popular Marvel Comics superhero, starring Edward Norton. This action sci-fi movie shows the origins of Dr. Bruce Banner, his over-exposure to gamma radiation, and his transformation into The Hulk. While navigating these slightly unpredictable outbursts that make him turn very green, Banner is also forced to fight off some unwanted foes and the mutated villain known as The Abomination. Norton’s Hulk was given his own movie and origin story, and although this Hulk came about before Phase 1 of the MCU, he did not appear in the first Avengers movie and the character was recast with Mark Ruffalo.

Norton’s Hulk: Not The Right Fit

     Universal Pictures

With Marvel really building up Phase 1 of the MCU, the pressure to make the first Avengers movie one to remember was high. Audiences were anticipating The Hulk as a key team player in this next step in the franchise. At the end of the day, Marvel chose to recast the role after Norton’s 2008 portrayal of the character. It is commonly known among audiences that the reason for this, per Cinema Blend, is that Norton just did not fit the kind of movie Marvel Studios ultimately intended to make. However, a recast as big as this one cannot go on without some drama. Kevin Feige claimed that they recast the Hulk to find someone who worked well with the cast and was excited to fill the role. Well, per Heroic Hollywood, Norton’s team was not happy about the implications this kind of statement has on Norton as an actor. Norton’s managers claim that Feige’s words were misleading and defamatory toward Norton’s work ethic and passion for the role.

Ruffalo’s Debut: The Avengers (2012)

     Marvel Studios

Ruffalo has been playing the iconic superhero since his 2012 debut in The Avengers. Ruffalo took the role, and it seemed to fit him like a glove. He, as an actor, is just understated yet charismatic enough to really draw a stark barrier between Dr. Banner and the Hulk that really fits. His introduction with Natasha being the one to recruit him was the perfect way to bring him into the franchise. Since then, Ruffalo has cemented his name in history as the Hulk we know and love. Although the change was not without some drama, the casting choice was the right one and Ruffalo’s Hulk remains a fan favorite. If like us, you can’t get enough of seeing the Hulk in the MCU, Ruffalo is continuing in the franchise, appearing in the Disney+ series She-Hulk.
