Zoe Terakes, a non-binary and transgender performer, first came out to the acting community at the age of 19, and according to Q News, they underwent gender-confirming surgery in 2022. They began performing on stage, appearing in shows such as A View from the Bridge, Metamorphoses, The Wolves, and A Doll’s House Part 2. Terakes made their on-screen debut in Janet King as Pearl Perati, a homeless adolescent, with Marta Dusseldorp in 2017. They later appeared as Scarlet in a two-episode storyline on The End.
Their major break came in 2020 when they were cast as transgender character Reb Keane in season 8 of Wentworth, the widely praised Australian reimagining of Prisoner Cell Block H. Now to Love magazine quoted Terakes as saying, “I really fought for it. I emailed the producers to let them know how important it was to have a trans person telling this story. It was also terrifying, because suddenly I had the role and I felt the weight of the trans community on my shoulders. I didn’t want to get it wrong.”

By 2021, Terakes was developing a name for themselves as an actor. They appeared as an employee in The Moth Effect and as Glory in the Hulu drama Nine Perfect Strangers. Terakes fans will be able to see them in the upcoming MCU television series Ironheart in the future.
How the MCU Celebrates Diversity
Marvel Studios
WandaVision addressed mental illness in a manner that few comic book-based shows or films have. The program provided an in-depth analysis of pain, loss, and wrath, allowing us to watch a psychological breakdown triggered by genuine tragedy. It’s a watershed moment in superhero entertainment, let alone the MCU. WandaVision is also heavily feminine, offering women representation differently. At every level — hero, villain, secondary hero, and sidekick — women were the focal point.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston) confirmed that its titular television character, like his comic book inspiration, is bisexual in one of the most breakthrough MCU television moments. The MCU is still lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of queer representation, but Loki quietly revealing a basic truth about his identity made a big impact. Loki Season 2, which is set to premiere in 2023, might go more into this.
Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) becomes Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Solider after struggling with whether or not he should carry the shield. The path of a Black man donning the Captain America mantle required a series-length examination. Part of that narrative was Sam’s sister, Adepero Oduye, who frequently served as a powerful counterbalance for all the weight that went into Sam’s decisions. Other socially-relevant topics addressed in The Falcon and the Winter Solider include Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider’s (Sebastian Stan) struggle with PTSD and the search for his true identity, the strong likelihood of a Latin-American Falcon (Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres), as well as the beginnings of a major female ringleader, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
LQBTQ+ Representation on TV Matters
Hulu
The World Economic Forum notes that, “Telling diverse and inclusive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) stories has never been more critical. An unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ bills continue to be proposed in state legislatures across the US.” Allowing people to see themselves in the media, and know they aren’t alone is a huge thing. Most of us who are not a part of the LGBTQ+ community can turn on the television and see something we can connect with easily, but those within the community struggle to find this feeling.
The reflection of seeing someone who looks like you, who thinks like you, or is going through something you are going through is so important to our development as human beings. The Proud Trust says, “It is important that young people see that LGBT+ people exist in all aspects of wider society, so they can see that being LGBT+ is not a barrier to reaching your aspirations and that being LGBT+ is a ‘normal’ and valid identity.” Essentially, all people should have a chance to be represented in the media.
