The Scream franchise has been surprising horror fans since its first installment in 1996, a film that redefined the horror genre, making fun of slasher films while also being an iconic slasher itself. The next movie, which has yet to receive an official title, is commonly referred to as Scream 6 and is set to be released in March of next year. Actress Melissa Barrera, who played Samantha Carpenter in the 2022 reboot of the franchise, says the sequel could be ‘a hundred times gorier’ in an interview with Collider:
Scream isn’t the goriest slasher franchise out there, but it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, either. The series relies more on mystery, twists, and unnerving performances rather than pure shock value. The upcoming installment will still feature those but is cranking up the blood and guts. It’s not just a stylistic choice but surprisingly something Barrera enjoys: “It’s fun to be covered in blood. I personally love being dirty and bloody.” Another Scream star, Jenna Ortega, also called the upcoming installment ‘gore heavy’ in an interview she did last month. Ortega claimed that the next version of Ghostface will be “the most aggressive and violent” we’ve seen yet. Scream 6 will take place in New York, a far cry from the relatively quiet suburb where the series began.
“There was a saying on set because (directors) Matt and Tyler were always asking for more blood and more sweat. They always just wanted more. “More blood spritz” was the saying because they would just always want more. With the last Scream, they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been, up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay. But with this one, they were like, ‘We’re going all out.’ It’s potentially a hundred times gorier.”

Neve Campbell Won’t be Returning in Scream 6
Paramount Pictures
Earlier this year, it was announced that actress Neve Campbell passed on the opportunity to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, saying that the offer the studio gave her was too low considering how much she brings to the franchise. She’s appeared in every Scream film until now.
Scream 6 is a sequel to the 2022 Scream movie (which is commonly referred to as Scream 5 to reduce confusion, since it sports the same name as the original 1996 Scream). Scream 5 was a mini-reboot of the franchise after original director and horror icon Wes Craven passed away in 2015. He directed the first four Scream films, in addition to the original A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Scream 6 will release on March 10th, 2023. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct the film, with William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein serving as producers. The cast includes Courteney Cox, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, and Mason Gooding. Paramount Pictures is set to distribute the film.
