Actor and soon-to-be-director Michael B. Jordan cannot wait to go toe-to-toe with Jonathan Majors in the upcoming sports drama sequel, Creed 3. In a discussion with Variety, Jordan has hyped Majors’ performance as the movie’s antagonist, describing himself and the star of Netflix hit The Harder They Fall as a “match made in heaven.”

The newest addition to the Rocky saga, Creed, was released back in 2015, and continues the Sylvester Stallone-led franchise from a whole new perspective. Introducing audiences to Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the conflicted son of boxing champion Apollo Creed, Adonis never knew his famous father, who died before he was born. With boxing in his blood, Adonis seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any he has faced in the ring.

“Jonathan’s just an incredible actor, an incredible person. Me and him, we just connected the first time we spoke. And then when I pitched him the film, he hit me right back and it was all go from there, you know? So, he was bought in. He has so many different talents, and things that he brings to the table. He was just perfect for the role, so it was a match made in heaven. I’m extremely lucky. We’re very blessed to have him and I can’t wait for everybody to see what we do.”

Met with critical acclaim, the first Creed is considered to be a worthy continuation of the beloved Rocky series, and was followed up by a sequel in 2018, Creed II, which continues the Balboa/Drago rivalry, and finds Adonis accepting a challenge from Drago’s son. While not quite as well-received as its predecessor, Creed 2 continued the financial success of the series, paving the way for Creed 3.

Not much is yet known about the plot of the highly anticipated threequel, but it will see the return of Tessa Thompson as Bianca alongside Jordan. Lovecraft Country and Loki star Jonathan Majors will portray the opponent of the piece, and while details of his role remain a mystery, the actor has previously discussed facing off against Michael B. Jordan.

“In my opinion, there’s no difference, but there is,” Majors explained when discussing the difference between playing good guys and bad guys. “What is happening, how it manifests may seem like there’s malice in it. Sometimes I feel like with the villains or the antagonist, there’s more hurt, so it almost seems impractical or it seems extreme what it is they’re trying to do.” Not only will Majors be on villain duty in Creed 3, he will also terrorize the MCU as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Michael B. Jordan has become known for physically dedicating himself to the role of Adonis, and this is something that Jonathan Majors also plans to accomplish. “This is something my coach said: ‘People live the way they fight.’ So you learn a lot about yourself when you’re training, and you can surprise yourself,” he said.

Michael B. Jordan will both direct and star in Creed 3, which is scheduled to be released on November 23, 2022.
