As someone who brought one of the most popular depictions of Batman to life, Michael Keaton has long been a fan favorite of the superhero movie genre. After starring in the original Batman film by Tim Burton, Keaton went on to reprise the role for the sequel Batman Returns. More recently, he has made his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, a character he revisited in Morbius.
Keaton is also returning to his Batman role for multiple upcoming movies. He will be a major player in The Flash with the multiverse allowing him to join Ben Affleck’s Batman in the DCEU. Keaton’s Batman is also confirmed for Batgirl, a movie that’s in development at HBO Max. In a new interview with Variety, Keaton spoke about what it was that appealed to him about reprising his Batman role after so many years.

Taking part in the superhero genre might be fun for Keaton, but that doesn’t mean he’s the biggest fan of watching them. The actor admits that he hasn’t actually watched any installments of the MCU or the DCEU from start to finish. He explains that it’s not because he looks down on them but he is just far too busy which leaves him with very little time to watch movies, especially lengthy movies like recent superhero films tend to be.
The Flash Screenplay Impressed Michael Keaton

The screenplay penned for The Flash by Christina Hodson was another reason why Michael Keaton wanted his Batman to return in the film. With the strong story that the screenplay has in place for the film, Keaton was intrigued enough to see if he could successfully pull off playing a character he hasn’t portrayed on the big screen in three decades.
The Flash is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on June 23, 2023. Andy Muschietti directs the film which also stars Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck.
