Michael Keaton has heaped praise on The Flash director Andy Muschietti, calling him “fantastic” and applauding the filmmaker’s approach to bringing back his version of Batman. While speaking on The Jess Cagle Podcast with Julia Cunningham, Michael Keaton teases his return as The Dark Knight as “fun,” as well as providing some details into how his Caped Crusader comeback came to fruition.

Much like the MCU, The Flash will introduce audiences to the DC multiverse, using the comic book arc “Flashpoint” as a major inspiration, and finds Barry Allen travelling back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. Again, much like the MCU, this will bring unintended consequences to his timeline, with variants of familiar characters being introduced throughout the multiversal adventure.

“When it came around again first of all I was getting curious about it. I thought, ‘Boy, what would that be like?’ And then, coincidentally, there were murmurs, and I got a call from Warner Bros. They wanted to talk to me about something and there was hints of Batman. It has to be good. There’s no reason to do it if it’s not good. It’s not gonna really change anything. And I just jumped in and had fun. And why would you not? You know, I mean, director Andy Muschietti is fantastic, and he’s really creative. I don’t know. It’s fun.”

While “Flashpoint” will act a starting point, The Flash is likely to be a very loose adaptation, making many substantial changes along the way. One of the major talking points of The Flash revolves around the inclusion of Batman Returns star Michael Keaton, who is reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman from the Tim Burton universe, with the character seemingly featuring heavily in the movie’s plot. Fans are already hugely excited to see Keaton once again don the cape and cowl, with his approval of director Andy Muschietti’s vision sure to make the anticipation even more palpable.

The idea of Michael Keaton returning to the role of the Batman, a role he has not played since way, way back in 1992, came as a huge surprise. Now, news has since emerged that Keaton’s tenure as the iconic superhero will continue beyond just The Flash, with the actor due to appear in the upcoming HBO Max project, Batgirl, which stars Leslie Grace as the titular member of the Bat-Family.

While details of Batgirl remain a closely guarded secret at present, several images from the set have appeared, showing that it will fill in some of the gaps between Batman Returns and now, even giving Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight his own Robin.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck. The Flash is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 4, 2022, following multiple delays caused by the director changes and the COVID-19 pandemic.
