If we’re getting a new Superman in the DCU, then surely new incarnations of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor are sure to follow. Courtesy of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the future plans for Superman are changing dramatically as the plans for the DCU’s movie slate come together. Controversially, Gunn and Safran have nixed all plans for Henry Cavill’s Superman to continue on in the DCU. This is because Gunn is penning the script for another Superman film that will introduce a younger version of the extra-terrestrial superhero.
Noticing that recasting these major characters is imminent, actor Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in the prequel series Smallville, wants his name to be in the hat to play the DCU’s version of that same villain. On Twitter, one fan suggested Michael Rooker for Lex Luthor, likely due to the former’s frequent collaborations with Gunn. In response to that message, Rosenbaum reminded everyone he spent years playing Lex and hopes that will give him an edge with potentially landing the part.

“I hope I’d be in the running,” Rosenbaum writes. “I mean I did play him for 7 years. Unless you guys would have a problem with that.”
Michael Rosenbaum Wants to Keep Playing Lex

It’s not a shocker to see Michael Rosenbaum hopeful to play Lex Luthor. He is clearly keen on playing that role, as he has been working with Smallville co-star Tom Welling to get a continuation of the series off the ground. The two have been developing plans for an animated series adaptation, and that would allow Rosenbaum to return as the voice of Lex. Though, Rosenbaum said he had a chance to reprise the role for The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, but he turned it down as he wasn’t shown a script first.
“I’ll just be straight up about this,” Rosenbaum said of why he didn’t do the cameo. “WB called my agents Friday afternoon when I was in Florida visiting my grandfather in a nursing home. Their offer: No Script. No idea what I’m doing. No idea when I’m shooting. Basically no money. And the real kick in the ass ‘We have to know now.’ My simple answer was ‘Pass.” I think you can understand why."
Perhaps things will be different with the DCU. In any case, it won’t hurt for Rosenbaum to make his wishes known, as it puts him into the running.
